World AIDS Day Observed Today

The World AIDS day is being observed every year on December 1. The day provides an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and to show support for those living with HIV.

The theme for World AIDS day this year is - Let communities lead.

World AIDS day is dedicated to raise awareness, educate and improve the understanding of HIV as a global public health problem.

According to the World Health Organization 39 million people around the world were living with HIV. It said, more than six lakh 30 thousand people died of HIV related illnesses worldwide last year.

Several myths surround HIV/AIDS patients that need to be fact-checked.

A social stigma resonates within the society that mere touch of those affected with the disease would lead to transmission of the virus. However, the virus is transmissible only through the exchange of bodily fluids such as blood, breast milk, semen or vaginal secretions from patients.??
