The World According to Xi Jinping
What China’s Ideologue in Chief Really Believes
By Kevin Rudd
Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden are planning to meet in San Francisco next week for their first in-person conversation in over a year. With tensions between the two countries high, it will be an opportunity for both leaders to better understand what is driving each other’s policy decisions.
It is particularly critical for the United States to grasp the ideology fueling Xi’s ambitions for China, wrote Kevin Rudd in a 2022 essay. “Xi has stoked nationalism by pursuing an increasingly assertive foreign policy, turbocharged by a Marxist-inspired belief that history is irreversibly on China’s side and that a world anchored in Chinese power would produce a more just international order,” argued Rudd, the former prime minister of Australia and Canberra’s current ambassador to the United States. “The United States should realize that China represents the most politically and ideologically disciplined challenger it has ever faced during its century of geopolitical dominance.”

1 年Best essay I have read in a while. The West embraces freedom; this freedom offers a path through the contradictions. Liberalism and Republicanism are ideas that realize there are no absolutes; this is critical to the reality of natural freedoms. An international system based on the universal freedoms of man , Liberalism and Republicanism, are the best ideas we have.
