The World in 60 Seconds - November 11, 2016
Hey there. I’m Ian Bremmer and it is the day after the day after the day after which means this is the President Trump edition of The World in 60 Seconds. Here in the West Village, those two things don’t really go together. Moose could care less, but he’s here to watch. I have your questions all lined up, so let’s go.
Iran Deal: Ripped up?
On balance I am going to say no, and I am going to say no because even though Gingrich is in the other direction, the Russians certainly don’t want that to happen and I don’t think Trump will see the point in it. Ultimately, I think the deal is going to stick.
Paris Agreement: Ripped up?
Well it will take him four years to do that officially, but I think we can basically say further movement on climate is dead. Under the Trump administration, the U.S. is going to move in the other direction and that is going to make it much tougher for those like China and India to do much more emitting to see coordination, climate is getting warmer.
NATO: Will they pay up?
No. I think the Germans and the French will do more in terms of defense but that will also be a hedge for alternative European defense integration, NATO gets weaker.
South Korea and Japan: Will they pay up?
Japan certainly will. They have been doing it already. Abe is making this quick trip to the U.S. I think U.S.-Japan relations on balance will be ok under Trump. In South Korea, their president has 5% approval ratings right now. On balance, this could lead the opposition to come in -they are going to tilt much more to China if that occurs.
Nukes: Will they be used during a trump presidency?
Let’s certainly hope not. I know not by Trump, maybe by other people. Cyber is a much bigger concern.
Those are your questions. We are out of time and I will see you guys in a week.
