Workspace ergonomics; essential to your vision

Hybrid work mode has changed our lifestyles but has also changed the ergonomics of our workspaces; multiple screens, the layout of the workspaces and the increase in screen time (13 hours daily) create new visual needs for your patients and require new technologies to respond to these changes [1].

The search for lenses offering comfort and visual precision indoors becomes essential for your patients. In this article, we will present the best practices to share with your customers as well as the optical solutions developed by Nikon Optical Canada.

Between the computer and our eyes

First of all, the layout of a workspace is as unique as the visual needs of your patients; ergonomics must therefore respond exclusively to the needs and necessities of the person behind the screen. However, there are universal parameters on which to rely.

The layout of the work surface must consider [2]:

  • The physical environment: lighting, room space and freedom of movement.
  • The required work equipment: work tools, furniture, accessories, storage, etc.
  • The nature of the work: its job description, requirements, demands, etc.
  • The worker’s unique profile: height, vision, physical characteristics, etc.

For example, to optimize comfort and visual acuity, the screen should be positioned at eye level, on a raised surface, and should be slightly tilted backwards to facilitate reading. We recommend positioning the screen at arm's length to avoid overstraining or tiring the eyes too quickly, and to allow them focus naturally without any stress. Adequate lighting is also important for maintaining optimal vision because a well-lit room reduces stress and visual fatigue at work.

An ergonomic workspace not only improves productivity at work, optimizes posture, reduces physical and visual discomfort, but above all, allows you to maintain comfortable, optimal and efficient vision at all times so that no detail goes unnoticed.

In addition, inform your patients of the harmful effects of blue light produced by screens such as eye fatigue, headaches, reduction in the quantity and quality of sleep, and even the premature appearance of eye diseases generally linked to aging [3]. Because even if the screen is positioned correctly and the room is well lit, our eyes require additional protection against prolonged blue light exposure to reduce or eliminate any discomfort. Eye protection is essential to maintaining good eye health and optimal vision, daily and in all conditions.

For a comfortable and optimized vision

To meet your patients’ visual needs and hybrid way of working, Nikon Optical Canada offers new optical solutions adapted to modern life with the new line of E-Life Pro lenses.

For your patients working on multiple tasks simultaneously on different screens, smartphones and papers, the Home & Office Pro lenses, available in 1 M and 2 M versions, provide optimized visual comfort in dynamic near and intermediate vision, ideal for the viewing area needed for office work with face-to-face meetings. They offer efficient and uniform performance around the eye point with a near visual zone that is now 39% wider than a standard progressive lens.

The Online Wide Pro lenses are the ideal solution for your patients who work in a seated position for long hours and must read long documents or texts on screen. The viewing angle has been increased by 20% and the field of near vision is 36% wider than the Online Wide Neo lenses, thus facilitating visual transitions at short distances and reducing the visual effort required during long hours of reading.

Enhance the client experience in your clinic by supporting your demonstrations with Nikon Optical Canada's innovative simulation tools so that your patients can feel the Nikon difference in real time and test your recommendations. When taking measurements, use the Lenswear-i, a simulation and measurement device on iPad which allows your patients to preview the visual quality that their future lenses will provide.

The quality of a vision solution adapted to the needs of your patients lies in the attention to detail at every stage of the process, from the manufacturing of state-of-the-art lenses to the in-person delivery in your clinic.
