Workspace Conditions of the Future: Tools for Identifying Improvements in Your Work-life

Workspace Conditions of the Future: Tools for Identifying Improvements in Your Work-life

We recently facilitated a dynamic workshop at O Days, a music and culture festival in the industrial part of Copenhagen. This workshop was thoughtfully designed in an open format to create a collaborative and reflective environment.

Through reflective and group exercises, we aimed to inspire participants to reimagine their work situations. They first identified necessary changes, then reflected on barriers, and finally considered steps to achieve improvements. Read backward, the exercise provides a different perspective: taking small actions can help overcome challenges and move closer to an ideal work-life.

Given that the average person spends about 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime, it's important to create happy and meaningful work environments. This article provides reflective tools to help you imagine your ideal work situation.

What does an improved or ideal work life look like for you, what’s holding you back and what can you do now, when you're back at the office?

To improve your work life, begin by identifying obstacles such as inefficient processes, lack of resources, communication gaps, or cultural issues, whether you're employed or freelancing. Addressing these barriers can help improve your productivity and satisfaction. Also, think about what you can do on your own and how working with others can help you achieve your goals.

Here are some reflective questions to ask yourself:

  1. How does an improved or ideal work life look for you?
  2. What barriers and/or challenges currently exist that stand in the way of achieving an ideal or improved work life?
  3. What can we change here and now with the resources available?

Embracing Change: A Continuous Journey

The thing about change is that it will drift into everyday practices at some point a new need for change will occur. Change is when beliefs and habits of action are changed through interactions as part of new experiences.?

When we cut our work and agenda at Another Life into the bone or the core, we encourage change across the creative industries because change is needed. There's a misconception that change and its implementation are linear processes with a definite end, but change should be seen as a continuous cycle.

A good rule of thumb is to never underestimate the mind's ability to disempower. Without the conviction that we can make change happen, we won't act, even if we see the vision because our feelings will hold us back.

Change is complex, just like issues of racism, discrimination, sexism, and inequality. Our work at Another Life aims to help different stakeholders navigate these complexities by creating tangible methods and tools, like the exercise we presented at O Days.
