[Workplace Romance – Yay or Nay?]

[Workplace Romance – Yay or Nay?]

In a recent live session over FB, I discussed on workplace romance. I believe it is an important topic yet it is not often spoken of as it is a rather sensitive matter. I highlighted a few points during the discussion.

It's not possible to completely stop it from happening. Humans are emotional creatures and most people spend most of their time with colleagues - so, there's a higher chance of it happening. Take Bill and Melinda Gates, they met on the job too.

I'm not advocating for or advising against workplace romance. I'd like to believe that there's the up and down side of it. That's exactly why I had the discussion to share my perspective on the topic, so that individuals and HR are more aware about the matter.

Here is the summary on what I talked about:

Areas of concerns ?

  • Conflict of interest and unfairness at work.
  • Spiral out of control – it's not always going to be sunshine and rainbows; there could be storms too.
  • Setting a wrong example. Work is a professional place.

What should an individual do or not do ?

?? Inform superiors and HR for formality purposes.

?? Seek advise from superiors and HR on professional guidance around workplace romance.

?? Understand the risk involved.

?? Set boundaries regarding work and personal matters.

?? Prioritize work and professionalism.

?? Uphold reputation (personal and professional) at all times.

? Pursue or get romantically involved if not serious

? Have a direct reporting relationship (seek guidance from your superiors and HR instead)

? Hide or do it secretively (things may get ugly if you're exposed by colleagues)

? Engage in arguments publicly

? Engage in PDA (public display of affection) at work anytime

? Bias in work related matters

?? What can HR do to support?

?? Educate the best practices around workplace romance (if you can't stop it, then work around it)

?? Provide guidance instead of penalty – though it's not encouraged, but in the event if it happens, it is better to know the risks and priority to protect the individuals and company too.

?? Train management to respond (instead of react) to such sensitive situations

?? Actively listen to any concerns from the grounds that may arise
