At The Workplace: Existing vs. Living
Every morning I get joy, working alongside more than 70 teammates of Royal Brothers. Our personal journeys started out in the same way - struggling to find a purpose. And I understand that journey, because I started my first start-up at the age of 21. And as things were finally taking off, we had our first major setback. But since the beginning, I was looking to build an environment that not only survives, but also thrives.
To this day, my attitude towards the workplace remains the same. I want to know if we are existing, or actually living? There are employees who look forward to the weekend and stretch themselves from paycheck to paycheck. And then there are the “crazy ones”, who wake up every day to make a difference. To me, each person’s role has a significant impact on the workplace, overall. And if you don’t believe this basic thought, how are you going to be motivated enough to do your job?
Sometimes I feel that people are in the wrong place at the right time. They have all the resources to build a successful career, but they’re stuck with one job because it pays the bills. When I take interviews for certain roles, I always ask a question that no one sees coming. The interviewees are usually ready to talk numbers and facts, and they forget the basics. So I ask them: "Have you registered on the Royal Brothers website and downloaded the app?" If they’re stunned, I know my answer. They do not have the passion to drive this company forward.
Since we spend so many hours at the workplace, it is important, firstly for ourselves, to do something that we enjoy. So stop existing, start living and watch how success follows you.
