Workplace Anxiety 101- How to Deal with a Workplace Bully: A Guide to Reclaiming Your Peace

Workplace bullying can be a toxic experience, undermining your confidence and affecting your overall well-being. Workplace bullies do not always “act” like traditional bullies with threats and intimidation. It can be subtle. I distinctly remember a colleague I reported to some years ago that consistently stole my ideas and brought them to management. He seemed fine otherwise and, in general, was an OK boss, but just by causing workplace anxiety, he fit the definition of a workplace bully. ?If you're facing a workplace bully, it's crucial to take action to protect yourself and reclaim your peace. Here are some effective strategies to help you navigate this challenging situation:

1. Document Everything

  • Keep a Detailed Record: Maintain a journal to document every incident of bullying, including dates, times, specific behaviors, and the names of any witnesses.
  • Save Evidence: Save emails, text messages, or voicemails that contain abusive or threatening language or that demonstrate behavior that makes you uncomfortable.

2. Communicate Assertively

  • Direct and Calm: Approach the bully privately, directly, and calmly, expressing how their behavior is affecting you. Use "I" statements to avoid sounding accusatory. Express how this situation is making you feel.
  • Set Boundaries: Clearly communicate your boundaries and what behavior you will not tolerate. If done in private and with a sense of calm, this critical step can sometimes resolve the problem. But if not, seek support.

3. Building Support

  • Talk to a Trusted Colleague: Sharing your experiences with a supportive colleague can provide emotional relief and practical advice.
  • Consult with HR: Report the bullying to your HR department and provide them with documentation. Again, always calm, and always with the evidence to back you up.
  • Seek Professional Help: If the bully’s behavior is having a deleterious effect on you, consider consulting with a therapist or counselor. They can help you develop coping strategies and manage stress until the problem can be resolved.

4. Limit Interaction

  • Minimize Contact: Reduce your interactions with the bully as much as possible.
  • Avoid Social Situations: If the bully is involved in social events, consider skipping them or leaving early. I realize this sounds unfair to a victim of abusive behavior, but until the problem is resolved, minimal contact is strongly recommended.

5. Practice Self-Care

  • Prioritize Mental Health: It’s important to prevent bullying from affecting your work performance or work-life balance. ?Engage in activities that promote relaxation and stress relief, such as meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature. ?

6. Consider Legal Action

  • Consult with an Attorney: If the behavior you are experiencing is severe and has a significant negative impact on your job or well-being, consult with an employment attorney to discuss potential legal options. The attorney will be part of your support system. Often, it helps to know the legal ramifications of what you are experiencing.

You have the right to a safe and respectful workplace. Don't tolerate bullying. By taking these steps, you can protect yourself and create a healthier work environment.

Additional Tips:

  • Stay Positive: Focus on your strengths and accomplishments.
  • Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with positive and supportive people.
  • Learn to Say No: Don't feel obligated to agree to unreasonable requests.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: Don't expect to change the bully's behavior overnight.

By taking a proactive approach and seeking support, you can overcome workplace bullying and reclaim your peace of mind.
