Working at Wirex!

Working at Wirex!

I joined Wirex just over two years ago. Since then, the company has grown beyond recognition and is beginning to fulfill the enormous potential that was apparent when I came on board.

The first Wirex office opened in Kyiv and remains our largest to date. As well as vital parts of the company like the Customer Services team, it houses our world-class Research & Development department – the envy of payments companies around the world.

We opened our London HQ a little over 3 years ago. As can be expected with any startup – particularly fintech startups – it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but we’ve emerged bigger, stronger and more together than ever before. I am extremely proud to be part of an HR team that has developed a truly best-in-class working culture that is all built around trust and cooperation.

Put simply, we trust our employees. Personal development is at the forefront of everything we do. It takes time to develop a solid foundation that allows people to excel - and I believe that this process always starts with recruitment. Thanks to the hard work of the Wirex HR department, everyone we hire has an emotional attachment to Wirex and wants the company to succeed.

This translates to everyone working together to achieve a common goal, which means that we don't have to look over people's shoulders ensuring that work is being completed; we can fully trust everyone to manage their own time and still have complete confidence in the end result.

Of course, this also means that everybody shares a great deal of responsibility from day one. Fortunately, we have developed a very flat hierarchy in which it is not uncommon for junior members of staff to speak with senior management or the CEOs on a daily basis. We encourage proactivity. If someone has an idea that will improve our processes, there will always be a receptive ear.

I wanted to get an idea of how some of our new starters have found their time at Wirex so far; here’s what they had to say:

Lottie Wells - PR Manager - joined April 2020

"My time at Wirex over the past 6 months has been phenomenal. I began at the start of lockdown, and despite being faced with a remote on-boarding and the inability to meet my colleagues in person for the first 4 months here, I had the warmest of welcomes and felt comfortable as soon as I started.

Looking back on my achievements, I am astounded at how much I have learnt and developed as a person. From the first week, I was trusted and given the autonomy I needed to make crucial decisions regarding the press strategy, whilst given support from key stakeholders across the business to achieve this. There is no strict hierarchy at Wirex; everyone, from the CEOs to new starters are considered to be on the same level, and are always eager to collaborate and work together to achieve Wirex’s goal of making it easier for everyone to use cryptocurrency in the everyday.

It’s great to work alongside a group of people passionate about fintech, crypto and Wirex’s mission; I truly believe that the company and product are going places, and it’s been great to contribute to and be a part of the company as it grows."

Martyna Dudek - Paralegal - Joined March 2020

"At Wirex , I am a part of a small legal team, spread across two different time zones, which manages all legal matters for the Wirex Group. Our team is very well integrated and direct in our communication which makes it possible to handle the challenges arising from the company’s rapid expansion.

At Wirex, we have a lot of industry firsts, especially in the crypto space, such as being the first crypto-native company to secure a partnership with Mastercard. This is incredibly motivating because often, when we work towards company goals, we also push forward a significant part of the industry. I often find myself working on solutions to problems that did not exist until recently, such as adjusting the business to new regulations like the Travel Rule in Singapore and the US.

The emphasis that Wirex places on regulatory compliance also makes it a very stimulating legal environment. The legal team here is very creative and commercially oriented, juggling jurisdictions and areas of law with incredible ease. That’s what makes it a very rich environment to learn from but also one that drives you to always be your best.

When you join Wirex, it opens up a world of initiatives that go far beyond the day-to-day business, like encouraging women in the crypto industry and giving back to local communities. This happens through powerful campaigns like the Rising Women in Crypto Power List and a Charity Day Off. This social consciousness comes from great leadership but also from the fact that everyone at Wirex has a very diverse background and a “backstory” which cannot be summarised in a headline, that’s what instantly made me feel at home as part of this team."

Chris Vaughan - Risk Manager and Leeds fan - Joined September 2019

"When I took the decision to move away from my role at online behemoth Amazon to Wirex last year, a lot of eyebrows were raised among my friends and family. As a young and ambitious professional, I was looking to take on greater responsibility early on in my career and to maximise my opportunities to learn new things. I hoped this step into the unknown would pay off. Thirteen months later, I can safely say it's been the best decision of my career.

I began as a Compliance Analyst in August 2019, stepping into an environment where I needed to adapt quickly to deliver solutions. As a rapidly expanding fintech, I knew I would need to develop robust, scalable processes that would work for one user as well as they would work for a thousand. Working for Wirex, you are truly on the cutting edge of the industry, and it means you can never rest on your laurels. I felt at home almost immediately at Wirex, helped in no small measure by the people, who really make the company what it is. Everyone feels like they're pulling in the same direction, but no one take themselves too seriously either.

Another pleasure of working here is that no two days are alike. Being recognized for hard work meant I was able to turn my hand to new challenges early on in my role, allowing for the opportunity to work on large-scale projects that affect the entire Wirex customer base. After helping to build the groundwork for a world-class financial crime team, I was promoted to Risk Manager in June 2020, where I look forward to learning more and helping to guide the company as we offer more and more exciting products and expand to new marketplaces. Sometimes taking a risk does pay off."
