Working in a Toxic Environment

Working in a Toxic Environment

Over the last 2 years we’ve seen story after story about the Great Resignation, Quiet Quitting, Overemployment, Quick Quitting and, most recently, Quiet Firing.

And you know what?? It’s the Millennials and Gen Zs who are at fault.

Just kidding :)

But seriously, this is literally a complaint that companies have that “people don’t want to work anymore” and we haven’t talked about the complaints that managers have about Gen Zs and Millennials.

All of those news headlines have the same root cause:

Asshole Bosses.

Research shows that 65.1% of employees work for destructive leaders and the side effects of destructive leadership is lower job performance, lower job satisfaction and lower profitability.??

But it’s even worse than that; bad bosses create toxic workplaces.

And you might think toxic workplaces are just the way it’s always been but this study out of MIT breaks it all down for you:

Toxic workplaces impose serious and lasting harm on affected employees. Workers who experience the elements of a toxic culture are more likely to suffer from greater stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout.4 They are also 35% to 55% more likely to be diagnosed with a serious physical disease.5?

Not only are toxic workplaces reducing profits, they are literally killing people.? I can say that from the research and because it almost killed me too.

And you might be thinking, “well those stats don’t look great but I’m not an asshole boss” and you’re probably right.? But bad bossery takes many more forms than the arrogant and violent boss (actually that type of boss is experienced by only 5.5% of the workforce).? There are 5 other bad boss profiles that we’ll touch on in a future article.

We can put an end to all these news stories, we can create a workplace that’s low of fear and high on trust, we can become the leaders that we’ve always wanted to have, and when we do that, we literally can be saving lives.

Don’t wait for the next news story, don’t wait for the next wave of people to quit, don’t let bad bosses destroy your company’s reputation, people and bottom line.

Take action now for yourself, your family and everyone around you.

Rob Kalwarowsky - productivity increases for 50 years have been spectacular. Real terms wage increases for the workers delivering that productivity for 50 years have been around zero. Why on Earth would any working person do a scintilla of work or put in extra discretionary effort to have owner | employers | executives piss in their face and laugh at them…?:-

Rob Kalwarowsky, thanks for sharing. I am very happy to be semi retired. During my last decade of working , I noticed that the pressure on management to be all things to all people increased greatly. A lot of management jobs are revolving doors.
