Working towards a strong EB-1A profile with 3-5 years of experience in your field

Before you start profile-building at this level of experience, review the EB-1A criteria and pick the criteria you think you can meet in three to five years. The criteria you pick will depend on your profile and also what kinds of activities you enjoy doing. For example, for some people writing and publishing scholarly articles might not be the criterion to focus on simply because they don’t like or are not good at writing. That’s ok! You do not need to write to be qualified for EB-1A.

You’ll need to meet at least three criteria to have a viable case, but plan on targeting and building towards meeting more than three criteria. I usually recommend targeting at least five, potentially six criteria. By targeting more than three, you’ll probably end up with enough to meet three or even four (you will not know which opportunities you pursue will pan out so it’s best to target as many criteria as possible when you’re still starting to build up your profile).

After you pick your criteria, you should start getting really involved in your field and actively seeking out opportunities in your field that are related to your chosen criteria. Engage in not just targeted opportunities but general opportunities to get involved as well as they can also lead to relevant profile-building opportunities (at this stage and level of experience, it’s best to go narrow and broad at the same time). It’s why I tell a lot of clients in consultations to not say no to more general opportunities if they’re still early in the profile-building process because even opportunities that aren’t exactly related like the chance to volunteer at a conference could lead to more related opportunities like authorship opportunities (because of someone you met at the conference) or judging opportunities.

Just keep finding ways to get involved in your field and check in every few months to see how much progress you’re making towards your chosen five or six criteria. For a lot of you, building a strong EB-1A profile will most likely take 2-3 years.
