Working Remotely at Immutable!

Working Remotely at Immutable!

We chatted with our Software Engineer, Sie Huai (Edric) Gan , about his experience working remotely at Immutable.

Why did you choose to join Immutable??

Between 2020 and 2021, NFTs considerably grew in popularity, providing me the opportunity to work on several NFT projects. This was my initial exposure to the Web3 community, which I found quite appealing. I became enthusiastic about blockchain technology and the expanded capabilities afforded by smart contracts. This marked the start of my drive to transition into a company with a focus on Web3.

How do you find working as a remote Immutable??

This is my first remote role, and the experience has been amazing! Not having to commute has saved me a lot of time, enabling me to focus better in my personal study room. I've optimized my home office to cater to my specific needs, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

What I appreciate most about working remotely is the flexibility it brings. I can set daily objectives and plan my day to achieve them. This is particularly useful for running personal errands during the day as I can adjust my schedule accordingly, starting slightly earlier or later if needed.

What aspects of remote work make you feel more empowered or independent in your role?

With the company adopting a default remote policy, they've introduced many processes and tools to enhance collaboration. These include daily standups, Miro for team collaboration, Slack for communication, and recording, and meeting minutes for important meetings. These tools have streamlined my collaborative experience with everyone in the company significantly.

In what ways has remote work enhanced your overall job satisfaction and well-being?

I truly appreciate the flexibility of working remotely, allowing me to be more productive in a home office setting. This, in turn, gives me more quality time to spend with my family. I also enjoy working out in the early evening, around 5 p.m. The remote work arrangement has granted me the ability to fit in more exercise routines before sunset, which is a wonderful experience.

What tips or advice would you give to prospective Immutables who are new to remote work or considering transitioning to a remote work setup?

Switching the default communication method from synchronous to asynchronous is essential when working remotely, as not everyone can always attend meetings. Having a follow-up list/meeting recordings/documentation can ensure everyone stays updated.

One downside of remote work can be the potential loss of personal interaction, which may lead to feelings of loneliness. Thus, regularly going out to meet people is vital for mental well-being. Additionally, meeting up with Immutable colleagues in person, whenever possible, can be a refreshing change from just seeing them via a camera!
