Working principle and evaluating indicators of demulsifier

1. The working principle of demulsifier

The main function of demulsifier is to destroy or neutralize the emulsified structure between lubricating oil and water, so as to separate oil and water. Its working principle mainly includes the following aspects:

? Reduction of interfacial tension: Demulsifier can reduce the interfacial tension between oil and water, making oil droplets or water droplets easier to aggregate, thereby accelerating the process of oil-water separation.

? Interfacial film destruction: Water droplets in the emulsion are surrounded by oil, and the interface between water droplets and oil is usually protected by a stable film composed of emulsifier molecules. Demulsifier can destroy or weaken the structure of this film, so that water droplets re-aggregate into large droplets, and then settle or float up to separate.

? Surface adsorption: Demulsifier molecules will adsorb on the surface of water droplets, change their hydrophilic or lipophilic properties, and then promote aggregation and sedimentation between water droplets.

? Charge neutralization: Some demulsifiers can neutralize charged particles in the emulsion, so that these particles no longer repel each other, making it easier to aggregate and separate.

2. Key indicators for evaluating emulsifier performance

When evaluating the performance of emulsifiers (or demulsifiers), the following key indicators are usually used:

? HLB value (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance): HLB value is an indicator to measure the balance between the hydrophilicity and lipophilicity of the emulsifier. Emulsifiers with lower HLB values are suitable for forming water-in-oil emulsions, while emulsifiers with higher HLB values are suitable for forming oil-in-water emulsions. For demulsifiers, a suitable HLB value can effectively destroy the effect of the emulsifier and promote the separation of oil and water.

? Emulsion stability: The stability of an emulsifier refers to the ability of an emulsion to maintain a uniform and stable state under certain conditions. This indicator is usually evaluated by measuring the stratification of the emulsion over a period of time. The better the stability, the stronger the performance of the emulsifier.

? Demulsification speed: The effectiveness of a demulsifier is usually measured by how quickly it can separate oil and water. The faster the demulsification speed, the better the performance of the demulsifier.

? Separation effect (water content): After using a demulsifier, the residual water content in the oil is a key indicator for evaluating its effect. An effective demulsifier should be able to reduce the water content to a minimum to ensure the quality of the lubricant.

? Temperature adaptability: The performance of emulsifiers is greatly affected by temperature, so their stability and demulsification effect at different temperatures are also key evaluation indicators. Good emulsifiers and demulsifiers should be able to maintain stable performance over a wide temperature range.

? Compatibility: The compatibility between demulsifiers and other additives in lubricants is also an important factor in evaluating their performance. Good compatibility ensures that the demulsifier does not affect other properties of the lubricant.

Product Introduction

  • Our company's product is an oil-based demulsifier. In actual application, the product has good compatibility with various mineral oils and synthetic oils, and no turbidity occurs even after long-term standing.
  • The characteristics of this demulsifier are: it will not be carried away by the escaping water. In actual use, as the water in the oil is continuously escaping, the relative concentration of the demulsifier in the oil gradually increases, which is more conducive to oil-water separation.

This is the demulsification process of our products.

The picture above shows the oil after adding 0.02% demulsifier, the oil is clear and transparent.
A comparative experiment was conducted according to GB/T5096-2017 "Petroleum Products Copper Strip Corrosion Test Method". As can be seen from the figure below, although both copper strips have some corrosion, the corrosion of the copper strip after adding our company's demulsifier (on the right) is obviously better than that on the left without adding demulsifier.
