Working the Plan

This post originally appeared on the John Maxwell Team blog.

For 20 years, David Drewelow had been using John Maxwell’s books, principles, and teachings in his corporate career. “It always continues to amaze me how people easily connect with John’s principles, which are powerful and yet simple.”

In March of 2011, a friend saw on Facebook that John was building a team. When he shared the information, David immediately knew he would join. “Joining was a no-brainer for me because I saw the immediate value it could bring to my team and to my coaching practice.” He knew he would be able to use the resources the team provided to help him give new and exciting services to his clients.

As a founding member of the John Maxwell Team, David has been fortunate enough to watch it grow and expand into 149 countries. Often astounded by the global impact they have, he was especially moved when he heard about the result of the team bringing values based leadership to Guatemala. So, when the team announced plans to visit Paraguay in 2016, David once again knew he needed to be a part of it. “It was incredible,” he smiles. “It was incredible to have the opportunity to impact people from all over the world.”

Sharing his passion for bettering the lives of others, it’s his fellow John Maxwell Team members who have had the biggest impact on David’s personal growth and development. “I’m ADHD and I’ve struggled with maintaining the discipline to stay on track with personal growth plans that I start.” Three years ago, a fellow member suggested that he put his annual growth plan into his annual business plan. Rarely do we let our annual business goals fall by the wayside and David has found that by dedicating time to them both, he has been able to remain consistent in his growth.

After years of hard work David has recently launched a leadership academy in partnership with a university. “This is a leadership certificate with our first course based on the REAL Success program.” Passionate about helping people to identify and define their growth journey, David is determined to expand the program to more schools and bring a message of leadership to the next generation.

“When people get busy,” he says, “the personal growth piece is the first to go. It doesn’t matter what you want to do, make a plan and make the decision to start.”
