Put the tanning salon membership away and shelf the tanning spray bottles. It’s the middle of summertime and painfully difficult to avoid the sun. The sun holds a lot of power and, if used correctly, can promote good health, healing benefits, and a FREE perfect tan! However, it’s important to understand what ultraviolet (UV) rays are and how to protect yourself.
UV Rays have three forms: UVA, UVB, & UVC
UVA – These rays cause premature aging and long-term skin damage due to their deep skin penetration.
UVB – These rays cause sunburns and skin cancer by staying primarily on the surface of the skin
UVC – These rays are the most dangerous. However, they are mostly used in the Earth’s atmosphere and do not reach the surface in any significant amount.
How to protect yourself?
领英推荐
→ All skin tones, whether light or dark, can be sunburned and/or damage the skin. Thus, everyone should use sunscreen.
→ UV rays go through clouds. Thus, protective measures should be taken even on cloudy days.
→ A base tan provides very minimal protection and should not be used as the only protective measure against UV rays and/or skin damage.
→ UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation does NOT kill COVID-19 and can cause skin irritation.
→ Glass DOES NOT protect you from all UV rays and can still damage your skin. Thus, do not depend on clear glass as the only protective measure against skin damage from UV rays.
So, remember, you don’t have to pay for a tan with money or the health of your skin!
