Working in partnership across the railway

Working in partnership across the railway

It was energising to see such a diverse range of rail supply chain businesses and SMEs at our annual supplier engagement event last month. At Porterbrook, we are committed to supporting and working with our supply chain partners.

The stand-out theme for me was how our business is helping shape the pathway to a more sustainable railway and how our partnership with suppliers can support, accelerate and create opportunities around that green transition. Mike Noakes, Head of Rail at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy set a positive tone for the day and chimed with comments from Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris MP at the RIA Innovation Conference in April, where he emphasised the importance of ‘sweating assets’ across the railway.

The government’s backing for rail over the last year has been unwavering and the Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail set out by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps published on 27th May is an opportunity to renew the role of the private sector supply chain in providing investment and innovation to improve rail services across the UK. Such a strategic approach can enhance rail’s efficiency and productivity going forward as well as provide tangible benefits for taxpayers and passengers including improved performance and reliability.

I was particularly pleased by the enthusiasm from so many SMEs ahead of our upcoming expansion into the Long Marston Rail Centre on 23rd June which is a recognition of the potential of that site. It was also a timely reminder of how a vibrant and active rail supply chain can enable a more effective use of rolling stock assets. Our investment in new technologies such as battery powered trains, hybrid technology and hydrogen power can only be delivered in collaboration with our many partners.

Our priority is to help build a more sustainable and resilient railway. That’s why we have to use what we have got better as much as building back better. This can only be delivered through closely co-ordinated work across the extensive rail supply chain.

Interested to learn if we can get a H2 powered train running on the Exeter to Waterloo line. This would be the first step in developing a South West zero emission advanced engineering sector.

Mary, as ever we at Gemini appreciate the continued support from you and your team. Our part in the supply chain is energised and ready to go with you, Innovation and collaboration are key to taking the next step.
