Working Parent
Before becoming a mother, I was constantly under the impression I never had enough time. There was this constant feeling of never having done enough at work, of things that I could do, learn and innovate if only the day had more hours, if I didn’t have to you know…sleep.
Fast forward into parenting and sleep became kind of a rare commodity. It is however amazing how our body and mind learn to survive with less, not that I am recommending it – highly unhealthy I am told, but I shall deal with this later ??.
Back to the office and all of a sudden, the feeling one profession I shouldn’t have overlooked was definitely the juggling one.
Yes, that is how being a full-time professional and a full-time parent feels most of the days. Your thoughts and actions are divided between mental, electronic and sometimes handwritten (I confess I am old-school in many ways) checklists. You do however learn, by force of context, how to mix and match…well most of them. You discover that creativity is a very useful tool and occasionally rejoice in the fact you are forced to further develop it. You realize flexibility can help stretch out (pun intended) many tangled ways. You learn how to choose your battles, even though you are not much of a battlefield fan.
The list of newly acquired skills is really an impressive, constantly expanding one and I would love to share some further examples, however, I now have to reorganize what I was doing in order to attend to an unforeseen, time-sensitive matter that just happened to pop up (nope, nothing unusual). ?I would promise to get back with a follow-up article, but as a parent, you cannot really plan that much in advance.
