Working as a Network Engineer at Companies House

I’ve been working at Companies House as a Lead Specialist Infrastructure Engineer in the Network team for just over 7 months now. I cannot believe how quickly the time has passed. I’ve learned a lot in my short time with Companies House, but I know there’s plenty more to learn.?

Before working at Companies House, I worked as the ICT Communications Manager for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. I worked there for 18 years, so when the opportunity came to work for Companies House, I was a little nervous about making the change after working for one organisation for so long. ?

I'm so glad that I made the career move. I felt at home as soon as I started here. All the people I work with and meet day-to-day have been so welcoming and have made me feel like I made the right choice.?

The work of the Networks team is quite varied, so no 2 days are the same. Over the past 7 months, I’ve worked on a variety of tasks, including: ?

• upgrading on-site wireless infrastructure?
• connecting VPNs via AWS
• continuing the roll out of zero trust network access to more colleagues?

• upgrading firewalls

An exciting aspect of the work we’re doing is the continued migration of Companies House services to the cloud (both in AWS and Azure). There are lots of challenges to work out and lots of opportunities to learn new skills in the cloud networking space. I did not have much experience with cloud networking before joining Companies House, and this is an area I’m looking forward to learning more about and developing in. This could also be an exciting opportunity for anyone joining our team. ?

I've really enjoyed hybrid working and the flexibility that it brings. There are times when working on network improvements or upgrades requires physical access to the hardware, but there’s also flexibility to work from home.?

My decision to come and work for Companies House has been brilliant. I would recommend it to anyone. The culture is great, the people are friendly, and the work is interesting.?
