Working to Maximize AI Interactions? Try Saying ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’.

Recently, I had a fascinating chat with my colleague and friend, Tracey Seward, on a topic close to both our hearts: "Humanizing AI" and how we engage with Large Language Models like ChatGPT or Bard. Tracey, a maestro in human and interpersonal engagement, sparked something in me when she described her approach to interacting with these Models.

Tracey navigates her conversations with LLMs with a warmth that's both rare and enlightening. She prefers to ask rather than command, peppering her interactions with "please" and "thank you." Interestingly enough, I've found myself adopting a similar approach.

Interactions with AI and Language Learning Models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly crucial. It might come as a surprise, but the age-old lessons of manners — the simple act of saying "please" and "thank you" — can significantly influence the responses we get from AI. Integrating these tokens of politeness into our AI interactions doesn't just warm the digital air; it improves the quality of the exchanges.

This revelation, shared in a moment of connection with Tracey, and our mutual drive to continue "humanizing" AI, have inspired me to delve deeper into this topic. I'm eager to explore and share examples of how treating AI/LLMs with a touch more humanity can not only transform our interactions but also the responses we receive in return.

1. Fostering a Positive User Experience

When you start an LLM/AI query with "please," it sets a tone of respect and kindness. This isn't about the AI appreciating your manners on an emotional level, of course, but about the programming and algorithms that are designed to respond to natural, human-like interactions. For instance, some customer service chatbots are programmed to recognize polite cues and prioritize these interactions. The result? You get quicker, more helpful responses, mirroring a positive human interaction.

2. Improving Command Recognition

By structuring requests politely, such as saying, "Could you please provide me with the latest sales figures?" instead of a blunt "Sales figures now," you naturally use more specific and clear language. This clarity helps AI to better understand the context and intent of your request, leading to more accurate and relevant responses. It is similar to giving someone clear directions to your house instead of just the address; the journey becomes much smoother.

3. Encouraging Detailed Responses

When you end your interaction with a "thank you," some AI systems, recognizing the polite closure, might be programmed to offer additional assistance or more detailed information, anticipating future inquiries. This behavior is designed to mimic a helpful human interaction, where expressing gratitude can encourage someone to go the extra mile for you.

4. Building Better Training Models

Every polite interaction you have with AI contributes to a vast pool of data that developers use to train and refine these systems. By interacting kindly and using polite language, you're indirectly influencing the development of future AI to be more responsive and user-friendly. Your manners help teach AI how to treat the next user with the same level of courtesy and respect, promoting a cycle of positive communication.

5. Reducing Misinterpretations

Lastly, incorporating politeness into your requests can reduce the chances of your intent being misinterpreted by AI. Polite phrases often require more specific language, which in turn, reduces ambiguity. Think of it as the difference between a rushed, mumbled order at a coffee shop and a clearly stated request; the latter is far more likely to get you the exact drink you wanted.

While AI may not have feelings, the way we interact with it can significantly impact the effectiveness of our communication. By treating AI with the same politeness we would extend to a human—using "please" and "thank you"—we not only enhance our own experience but contribute to a more positive, effective interaction environment for everyone. So next time you're typing out a command or request to an AI, remember that a little kindness goes a long way, even in the digital realm.
