"Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress, working hard for something we love called passion"?

"Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress, working hard for something we love called passion"

I've often read or came across this statement; "Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress, working hard for something we love called passion"

Passion is a big word, well at least for me especially towards my work; it’s a positive emotional connection to our work - often our most energy-consuming pursuit. There are several experiences that I have encountered in which I can see the difference in meaning of passion to someone; in this case to their work.

Well, here's the story (of the many) ...

There was one day I went to one of the famous hipster cafe chain in town. It was in the morning around 10 am. Was there with my colleague. It's a self-service cafe, so we went straight to the counter of where the cashier is. He saw us but ignored us at the same time. We had to really try to get his attention; and yes, we finally got it. Besides coffee, we wanted to order for something to munch, and we saw few types of muffins. We asked him, which muffin flavor is the best? He said, he didn't know because he never tried them and went back to what he was doing. He wasn’t smiling when he was serving us throughout the time, it feels like he was forced to do the job…

On the very same day, I went to another coffee shop in the evening, and on the contrary, I have gotten the full attention from the person who served me. I was greeted from afar…

The Barista: Welcome! Good evening ma’am, how are you feeling today? (with a very big smile on his face)

Me: I’m doing great, thanks. Oh, I should rephrase. I’m doing better than great with your energy, it helps! (smile)

The Barista: What would you like to have on this lovely evening? (smiling)

Me: Give me your best hazelnut latte, hot please.

The Barista: Our best hot hazelnut latte coming right up! Can I get your name?

Me: Lina-on-fire! (Grin)

The Barista: I can feel the fire ma’am. Enjoy your coffee! (Smile)

From the moment I’ve stepped into the café, throughout the ordering at the counter until I got my coffee and left the café; it was a very splendid experience. He has shared a very positive energy and passionate about what he's doing... and for that my day just got better and I believed his too.

Now, referring to these two of many experiences that I have encountered, which has given me a complete different views and thoughts of how much passion can drive a person's best behavior towards their work. All we need to do is basically put the passion into what we do, into our work and be the best at it while finding what's really meant for us... Often than not, many of us don't have the time and money to undertake a total career change to pursue our dream job, big changes typically come with major expenses. But we can always develop creative ways to infuse our careers with a passion that could have been a long-term calling for us.

My point is that, many of us spend about half of our waking hours on the job; we’re juggling with family, life or both and not to forget our demanding careers. And being energized and excited by the work we do can have a big impact on how upbeat we feel throughout the day simply because what we do does makes a difference...

So, why don't we do our very best at what we do rather than stressing and asking why do I need to do this? Why do I work here? Is this all there is? instead of.... I believe the grass is greener where I water it the most... :) #mytwocents

Well said Ailina. When we love what we’re doing, we don’t see the pain or the long hours. Because we enjoy what we’re doing! The big challenge is how do we get our team members to feel the same way? How do we infuse the energy and enthusiasm? How do we make them more passionate about what they’re doing? I’d love to hear on this. Thanks.

Very interesting article. Do we know what is our passion in the first place? I have asked this to number of people, my own engineers, a group of students from USM, and others, they themselves do not know their passion. I was lucky to discover a book by Marcus Buckingham title Now, Discover Your Strengths. From the survey done, the identified passion/talent/strength really matched what I enjoy doing, and I am lucky to be able use my passion/talent/strength in my work. I recommend to buy the book and discover you inner strength. You might be doing it already, it just that you don't know what they are.

As am reading the article, am reminded of how i love what i do & how much more easier the days are because of it... thank you for the reminder that making a difference should be infused from within! Love it!
