Working for Good
A big part of what we do at Young + Shand is helping ‘for good’ companies. This might be charities or it might just be smaller businesses that are ambitious, wanting to grow and just need a little bit of a hand.
The three main ‘for good’ clients that we work for are NZ Blood Service, Life Pod and Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ (LBC). LBC has become a bit of my personal charity, my sister battled and beat follicular lymphoma almost 10 years go and lives with that threat everyday.
So last year when we started working for LBC, myself and another four members of the team participated in Shave for a Cure and together we raised $10,000. And I got a whole new hairstyle too.
This year I’ve been roped into doing the Firefighters Challenge. That’s where teams of Firefighters compete to get to the top of the SkyTower wearing full firefighters gear. Apparently it weights around 25kg and I’ll have to race up 1,103 stairs climbing 51 stories to get to the top. It’s going to be tough.
Obviously I’m not doing this for fun. I’m doing it to raise awareness and money for the good work that LBC do. By making a donation you help support the 6 Kiwis diagnosed every day with a blood cancer or related condition.
The side benefit is that it’s forced me to get a little bit fitter. I’m not doing a lot more, everyday I’m just making an effort to get to 10,000 steps (it seems to be a thing at the moment) and also of course I take the stairs anywhere I go. I’m really enjoying the difference this makes, I’m feeling better, stronger and have more energy. And it’s also been good for our culture the team are proud of the social work we do and get behind anyone that’s raising money for a good cause.
The real challenge is going to be next Saturday, 28th May. I know it’s going to be tough, I know I won’t be the fastest but I’ll give it everything I’ve got. So if you could give a little too it would be great. Support LBC.

8 年Re the Go Pro, you need a film crew to run and film you with one of those gyro thingee camera's.... I'll volunteer to run the stairs with the camera if you can get a camera organised... hello anyone got a gyro camera I can run 1053 stairs with? Robett Hollis?

8 年Good on you Duncan, will you wear a Go-Pro so we can watch your effort streamed to a Young & Shand page or youtube? I am so all for it, I'm off to donate either way to encourage others to do something like you, for the good of others. I'll promote this to AFQY - A Few Quiet Yarns members to get as many of them on board, and encourage them to do a personal challenge for good. I know what mine is, but need to find out what challenge I'll be doing or creating ;-) More soon.
