Working From Home In a Post-Pandemic Environment

Working From Home In a Post-Pandemic Environment

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented changes to the global economy and the world of work. As the lockdowns and stay-at-home measures were put into place a large portion of the workforce were instructed to work from home to the fullest extent possible. Suddenly many professionals and small business owners found themselves figuring out how to conduct their functions remotely.

Fast forward to now, after working from home in a post-pandemic environment for over a year, many professionals have adjusted to the new normal and can perform most, if not all, of their responsibilities outside of an office. According to a Pew Research Center Survey, 71% of workers are currently working from home and over half, if given a choice, would want to continue working from home even after the pandemic. Perhaps, you're one of them.

So if you've enjoyed the flexibility and have embraced the change to a virtual work environment, you may be wondering how you can continue working from home indefinitely. This depends on many factors, of course, some which may be out of your control. For example, you may be part of a team and your company is actively encouraging people to return. What are your options if you really want to stay remote with minimal changes to your career?

You can state your case to your superiors and demonstrate that you are performing better working from home than the office. Perhaps, you have less distractions at home that allow you to be more efficient with your time and get more things done. Also, if you work on a team, be prepared to come up with ideas on how you can stay connected with your colleagues who may have chosen to return to the physical workplace.

Keep in mind that you may need to compromise a little bit even if your desire is to be fully virtual. Be open to coming in, at least initially, one or two days a week especially if there is an important meeting or training that you are participating in. Have good intentions during these conversations as there is no manual to refer to in "coming out" after a pandemic.
