Working from home - How's it going?

Like many people I’ve been working from home for some time now, and I’m lucky enough to have an office away from the house this allows me to have a separate work zone which fits my needs. I invested in a great desk, comfortable chair and have plenty of light close to a window

Whilst I love the flexibility of home working it took some time to get used to with structuring a routine, keeping motivated in "lockdown" and the lack of human interaction being the biggest challenges.

I’ve been able to create the right office space and keeping it tidy is important as is wearing comfortable, casual clothes which give me the right mind-set. Now my days have routine, structure are productive and my energy levels are high.

Routine and structuring the day is critical. This has kept me motivated and I’m able to not compromise my workplace/non-workplace boundaries.

Every morning a make a to-do list before the day begins and I allow a period of time for each of my tasks.

We all have productivity peaks at a certain time of day, one thing I try to do is make the best out of those peaks, for me it’s making those phone calls first thing and by 10h30 I’m in the “zone” so to speak.

Morning and evening are reserved for exercise maybe a walk, cycle or cardio training.

During the day I make a point to eat my meals away from my office in the kitchen or garden if the weather is nice, and making time for my partner and family as well as eating evening dinner together is also something I try to build in.

When things get tough or my mind goes blank I make time to step away from the work zone, fresh air and clearing the head normally does the trick.

Whatever works for you then build a routine around it!

Thanks

Matt

It’s interesting how we all have created unique routines. For me, I have a 1 hour break anytime between 12noon – 2pm where I go for a walk and listen to a podcast usually unrelated to technology. Currently I’m listening to “Unexplained” on Spotify. Like you, I’ll move away from my working space to eat breakfast or lunch – I need a separation of workplace/non-workplace.
