Working from home

So more and more companies in the UK are embracing working from home. This is an understandable move given the current climate, and I'm sure is new to many employees.

Since launching my business in 2011, I've had plenty of opportunity to work from home, when I'm not on client site or meeting candidates. Here's a few points I've picked up on that may help if you are new to working from home:

  • Who'd have thought the daily commute is so helpful? 30 minutes to get your brain in work mode, then 30 minutes on the way home to destress before you get through the front door. Some people may be able to get into work mode straight away, but for those who find it difficult, how about 20 minutes exercise, a crossword or sudoku? Allow your subconscious to gear up for work, while doing something productive.
  • 5 hours focused work at home is more productive then 7.5 hours in the office, at least for me. It's surprising how much time is taken up by social & professional chats, meetings etc. But all those things are important for health and wellbeing. Make sure to take plenty of breaks, and chat to work friends and peers by messaging, calls and video - may feel like skiving initially, but it's really important and will help your productivity.
  • While many people are self-driven, others need structure in their day to feel effective. Set yourself up with hourly, daily and weekly goals. Keep in touch with your team to make sure you are up to speed, and they know what you are up to.
  • Set yourself some strict rules about what you can and can't do during the work day. Distractions like TV and even the distressing state of the News will only get in the way of your productivity; however rewarding yourself with a break to catch up on Love Island (dangerous!) at lunch-time has its advantages.
  • Don't forget this is an enforced trial for many employers. If you find the prospect of working from home appealing, why not show how effective you can be? One outcome may be that when things return to normal, employers see the continued advantage of allowing home working. Good for you in reduced travel costs and time, a bit more flexibility, and improved trust. Good for them in being a more attractive employer, and one that is better to work for!

I'm sure there are a lot of points for consideration that I've missed, so please do share your experiences to help newbies get to grips with a change in work pattern.

Stay safe!
