Will Working From Home Become the New Normal? I Don’t Think So.
12 Months ago, the UK entered our first lockdown and for many of us office-based workers, our dream finally came true… The opportunity to work from home! This what we always wanted!
While the first two months were fantastic and we saved a lot of money on travel, the novelty quickly started to wear off. We shared the same space with our family members and roommates, who were also trying to learn and work at the same time. Most of us didn’t have the luxury of working from a study, so we had to set up shop on our sofas, bedrooms and kitchens. We were tired of staring at the same four walls each day and we missed the human interaction. It was all a bit frustrating!
We then started to see the workplace as somewhere more than just a place to work.
It was not only a place to do business, but it was a place to learn new things, a place to enhance your skills, a place to collaborate and most importantly, a place to build relationships with our colleagues.
Many experts and businesses have opted to go for the work-from-home approach, due to the cost-savings associated with their old office space, I kind of feel that these businesses have made a mistake. There are major benefits for corporations to have their staff working from an office, some include: Improved employee performance
- Greater and more effective collaboration
- Increased sharing of information across departments
- Better communication
- Improved Team Morale
- Better Employee Discipline
- Elevated Company Culture
At FI REM, we have been back in the office since mid-2020 and to be honest with you, I wouldn’t have it any other way. During the pandemic, we saw the business restructure and our approached change. By being in the office and working together, we were all able to buy into the new direction of the company and the excitement around the office was on a whole new level, it was pretty motivational to be honest.
While there is a risk of there being a Covid outbreak in the office, businesses will need to ensure that they put the right processes in place to ensure that the virus is kept outside its walls. If all safety guidelines are followed then it should be a pretty safe place to work from.
In business, Collaboration and relationships are the most important thing and this is why I think that working from home, will not be the new normal. Agree or disagree? I’d love to hear your opinion in the comments section below!
