Working as a DevOps Engineer: The Swiss Knife Approach
Working as a DevOps engineer feels like wielding a Swiss knife. There's always more than one way to implement a solution, and as with many things in tech, "it depends."
But for me, DevOps isn't just about getting things to work for Day 1 operations. My real focus lies in Day 2 operations—where utility, maintainability, and the cost of change take center stage.
Day 2 is where the magic (or the chaos) happens:
Every iteration I make improves upon the last because optimization is a journey, not a destination. My philosophy is simple: "If it isn't better today than yesterday, we aren't doing it right."
So when I build, I ask:
This mindset is what separates a good solution from a great one—and it's what drives me as a DevOps engineer.
I'd love to hear your thoughts: How do you balance Day 1 and Day 2 considerations in your projects? Let's exchange notes and sharpen our Swiss knives together!
