Working beyond supply chains
In this July issue?we introduce?our three newest landscape initiatives (plus one old favourite),?as always working in?close collaboration with?partners?to effect meaningful impact on the ground in the places where commodities are grown.? ?
Read on for landscapes?where we work with long term partners and?a mixture of local governments, companies, smallholders, Indigenous Peoples and local communities and many more stakeholders to ensure positive social and environmental outcomes for people, nature and climate. But first, news of a webinar on how to get the crucial finance to flow into these landscapes...
Financing models for land-based investments
On 30th July Proforest's David D'Hollander spoke about our landscapes work on the WBCSD webinar 'Financing models for land-based investments'.?David discussed the potential for landscape programmes to scale interventions for carbon reduction?
and removals on-farm, and to initiate long term emission reduction measures off-farm. Investors should broaden their scope to fully capture such returns, whilst recognising the need for not only mitigation but also adaptation actions for communities and farmers. We will share the recording on our website when available.
Sustain Kutim, Indonesia
Launched in 2023, SUSTAIN KUTIM aims to strengthen the capacity of the East Kutai District Government, local communities, smallholders, workers, and plantation companies to cooperate in transforming East Kutai into?a sustainable region for?agriculture, with a key?focus on palm oil.?East Kutai is now populated by vast palm oil plantations alongside the most extensive natural forest cover. The area contains significant area of wetlands, karst, mangroves, coral reefs, and habitats for some critically endangered species.?
Mato Grosso, Brasil
We are delighted to be partnering with IPAM , Mato Grosso State's Produce Conserve Include compact (PCI) and Produzindo Certo on a programme in Western Mato Grosso?– encompassing deforestation and conversion free supply chains, social safeguards for Indigenous Peoples and local communities, as well as regenerative?factors including crop yield, reduction of GHG emissions, and biodiversity protection.
The plan is to implement and scale up a territorial approach in West Mato Grosso based on the PCI, an initiative implemented by the Mato Grosso State, to encourage deforestation-free soy production to generate long-term positive social and economic impacts. The programme design was funded by the Consumer Goods Forum and Soft Commodities Forum companies, and the Land Innovation Fund . We are actively fundraising for the next phase - contact Tatiana Freire to get involved.

The programme is sponsored by?Cargill , with the collaboration of the unions through Fedepalma and Cenipalma .
Transamazonica Connections, Brasil
The first year of work on this landscape programme in Pará has been completed, with the team having engaged all relevant actors, and built a common understanding of the challenges and joint objectives.
We are still fundraising for implementation, which will focus on sustainable practices, capacity building, environmental regularisation and access to credit and incentives led by Solidaridad , traceability led by Proforest , and reintegration led by Imaflora . To get involved in any of these areas please contact Erika Monteiro.
