THE IT WORKFORCE DEMAND IN VIETNAM

According to statistics from the Ministry of Information and Communications (Vietnam), there are approximately 68,800 technology companies operating in Vietnam in 2022. The demand for IT human resources is very high not only in technology companies but also in other industries.

However, according to a report by the Adecco Human Resources Group, up to 76% of IT companies in Vietnam face difficulties in recruiting high-quality personnel. This shows that the demand for IT personnel in Vietnam is very high, but supply and demand are very unbalanced, and for businesses, finding, recruiting, and retaining talent is very challenging.

As of 2022, the number of IT personnel needed to meet the market demand is about 550,000 people. Each year, there are about 55,000 IT graduates, but only one-third of them meet the basic criteria of businesses. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the market is currently lacking nearly 200,000 IT human resources.

The IT industry is still very hot, but the quality of graduates in recent years has not improved significantly compared to the rapid development of the market.

For the specific nature of the IT industry, in addition to the IT knowledge and skills, students pursuing this field need to pay attention to the following:

  1. Self-learning and research skills: Because information technology is constantly developing, the knowledge learned in school cannot meet all the requirements of the market. Self-learning and research are necessary to meet new demands and increase efficiency, especially for third-year students who should participate in internships at companies in the field to access timely market requirements and necessary experiences to prepare for graduation.
  2. Professional communication skills: Working in teams and communication is an essential part of the IT industry. Good communication skills help improve work efficiency and establish good relationships with teams and customers.
  3. Problem-solving skills: The IT industry requires quick and accurate problem-solving skills. Students need to learn how to analyze and solve problems that arise in the process of work.
  4. Project management skills: Work in the IT industry often involves project management. Students need to learn how to plan, delegate tasks, track progress, and handle unexpected situations to successfully complete projects.
  5. English Skills: Undoubtedly, in this field, working extensively with international clients and colleagues makes English communication skills almost mandatory, not to mention that most of the materials and knowledge are in English.

The world is changing rapidly and there are many challenges ahead. We can see this most clearly in the recent layoffs at major global technology companies in late 2022 and Q1 2023. And most recently, the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) is estimated to have affected 100,000 jobs of startups associated with SVB. In addition, AI (specifically #ChatGPT) has been rapidly developing and is already impacting future jobs, particularly those that AI can do better than humans. We should value current jobs and strive harder to become a developer with depth and foundation to make a difference in the upcoming resource market.
