MOVE OVER BOOMERS...MILLENNIALS ARE TAKING THE WHEEL

Within the next two years, Millennials will make-up 50% of the U.S. workforce. By 2030, that number is projected to be 75% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Hiring managers I have spoken with have already witnessed the shift and are attempting to pivot in the way they recruit new staff and their thinking with regards to staff retention.

Millennials, those born between 1981 & 1996, are "changing the world more decisively than any other generation", according to Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup. Gallup's report, "How Millennials Want To Work And Live" points out some key changes that organizations can expect to see when hiring Millennials. https://www.gallup.com/workplace/238073/millennials-work-live.aspx

  1. Millennials want more than a paycheck, they want a purpose. Many Baby-Boomers found purpose in their families and communities and were more interested in a paycheck. Millennials are waiting longer to get married and their circle of influence has very much expanded to their workplace. An organization's mission is something a Millennial is paying attention to. One manager I spoke with told me that they were asked if they recycle in their cafeteria, during one of their interviews. Social responsibility of an organization is something of high importance to Millennials.
  2. Millennials are interested in development and growth. The Gallup report suggests that we save our money on trivial perks that many Millennials will look down on and focus on a pathway offering personal and professional development.
  3. Millennials don't want Bosses...they want Coaches. The old-school management style of "it's my way or the highway" will have Millennials burning rubber in a New York minute. They want to work for managers who recognize their strengths and are interested in working with them to continue to develop and improve in areas they are lacking.
  4. The Millennial generation is all about communication. Texting, Tweeting, Skyping, whatever the means, they are used to frequent communication and expect feedback on their performance to be the same. Old-school thinking that a once-a-year review will suffice, will find that manager having coffee much more frequently with the HR Director and spending a lot more time sifting through online resume boards.
  5. Millennials want to know that their contribution is recognized and valued by management. With current record low unemployment, and forecasts that tight labor markets will be with us for some time, if Millennials don't believe that their contribution to an organization is valued, they will find fulfillment elsewhere.

As Baby Boomers slip away into retirement, we will continue to experience a change in the landscape of healthcare personnel. From direct patient care providers to the C-suite, the Millennial influence will continue to impact healthcare organizations. Success will depend on how we adjust in attracting and retaining this rapidly growing segment of our workforce.

I also find that millennials what schedule flexibility. This is difficult to operationalize in healthcare where patient schedules drive the business.?
