Viral Acharya has resigned as the RBI's deputy governor six months before his term was to expire. He told Business Standard (paywall) his departure was due to “unavoidable personal reasons.” Sources told the publication Acharya will rejoin the NYU Stern School of Business as professor of economics, after serving his last day towards the end of July. The youngest RBI governor in the post-liberalisation era, Acharya was known for his aggressive views on central bank independence. His former boss Urjit Patel had resigned from the governor’s post in December.  Here's what people are saying.

India’s police force is among the world’s weakest with just 144 officers per 100,000 citizens, Livemint reports. Even fully staffing the police force by meeting the sanctioned strength of 2.8 million would take the ratio to 185 per 100,000 people, much lower than the UN-recommended 222. What compounds the shortfall is states’ falling expenditure on policing: data from PRS Legislative shows it fell from 4.4% during FY11-15 to 4% in the last four years. Earlier, a study showed 90% police officers clocked over eight hours a day and 73% didn’t get a weekly off even once a month. Here's what people are saying.

Videocon's Aurangabad plant is teetering on the brink of industrial unrest as employees haven’t been paid in 10 months, Business Today reports. Workers told the publication that the manufacturing unit is almost shut and starts operating only when there is a third-party order. The plant – which makes home appliances for companies such as LG, Hyundai and Philips – is said to employ nearly 6,000 people. Venugopal Dhoot-led Videocon Industries went insolvent last year and owes its lenders nearly ?90,000 crore.? Here's what people are saying.

Starting a kirana store or an eatery could soon get less cumbersome. The government is planning to slash the number of approvals required to set up shop to boost the ease of doing business at the grass roots, Times of India reports. Currently, opening a store calls for 28 clearances while a restaurant requires 17 approvals, ranging from GST registration to permissions from multiple municipal bodies. In comparison, restaurants in China and Singapore need just four clearances. The industry department is also considering doing away with the need for renewing licences, the report says. Here's what people are saying.

Three in five Indian professionals think soft skills trump tech chops when it comes to career progression, according to LinkedIn’s “Future of Skills 2019” report. Why? Because soft skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking will be relevant even in the face of automation and help expand the scope of technology. The study — which covered 5,000 people across Australia, India, Japan and Singapore — concludes professionals aren't doing enough on this front: 89% hiring managers say it's difficult to find talent with soft skills. Here's what people are saying.

Idea of the day:  When we are confronted with conflict, it is all too easy to focus exclusively on how we are feeling and how we need to respond. But Bishop Michael Curry reminds us of the importance of shifting our attention to what’s going outside of ourselves during those heated moments.

“It’s the stuff that we are not aware of in ourselves that has the power to control us in ways that we don’t intend. If I can get over myself, then I can think about the situation instead: What’s actually being said? What’s the cause? What’s the truth? That gives me a better shot at being less reactive and more responsive.”
