Working as an Entrepreneur

To Work should be an embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit even as an employee.

According to Investopedia, an Entrepreneur is said to be “an individual who, rather than working as an employee, founds and runs a small business assuming all the risks and rewards of the venture. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as an innovator, a source of new ideas, goods, services and business/or procedures”.

When you consider the second part of the definition “The entrepreneur is commonly seen as an innovator, a source of new ideas, goods, services and business/or procedures”, for me every individual can be an entrepreneur, whether creating and running a new business and/or working as employee who creates new ideas, goods, services and business/or procedures.

In all, every individual is an entrepreneur in his/her area of specialty because the sum of our synergetic work in turning the dream to reality is the entrepreneurship in each part that makes the puzzle whole.

So, my definition of entrepreneurship would be one where the entrepreneur possesses the following attributes towards the creation of new ideas that will bring about major changes.

1.     An entrepreneur is a starter – an initiator, a challenge and a driver – someone who creates something new which could be an initiative, a business or a company.

2.     An entrepreneur is a driver – he is the person in charge or the leader of the team or the person who we look up to for leadership

3.     An entrepreneur is accountable and responsible – he/she is the person who is ultimately responsible for his/her destiny – be it a venture, project, initiative or endeavor.

So, when next we hear the word entrepreneur, let us remember that it goes beyond you having share in startup company. Rather it is the ability to showcase our ability to be the following

a.     Innovative

b.     Leader

c.      Investing our time in creating value

d.     Having the passion to make a change

e.     Having the right attitude to be a starter, driver, accountable and responsible

For me, this is what it means to be an entrepreneur, and these are the concepts we should be bringing to the fore for the next generation of employers and employees so that we all can contribute to the success of any organization we are. (Employer and/or Employee)

Like we all have heard at some point or the other the “PARETO PRINCIPLE” (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Pareto developed both concepts in the context of the distribution of income and wealth among the population.

Today what I hear across our country Nigeria is the new buzz word “ENTREPRENEURSHIP” – the idea for me is more reflective of the Investopedia definition – “an individual who, rather than working as an employee, founds and runs a small business assuming all the risks and rewards of the venture.”

The reality must be that we as a people apply the principles of factor sparsity and let our next generation understand the fact that not all can become entrepreneurs in the context of setting up their own business, however, they can become employee entrepreneurs by creating new ideas, new processes, improved ways of carrying out services and producing new goods such that the objectives of wealth creation and sustainability are achieved.

In conclusion, the truth for me is that there are no ready made schools for teaching entrepreneurship, rather what we need to do is enlighten and develop more people to be creative in their thinking and let them know that there are no stupid ideas, cause once you understand the concept of an idea, then we must all create the enabling environment for the idea to take its form and improve on it till it becomes successful and have the ability to create new value and wealth.

Remember when next you hear the word ENTREPRENEUR, you must attribute it to the following

a.     Innovative

b.     Leader

c.      Investing our time in creating value

d.     Having the passion to make a change

e.     Having the right attitude to be a starter, driver, accountable and responsible
