WorkdIn - Logo Design Case Study

Logo - It's a visual ambassador of your brand which helps you in connecting with customers. It is the heart of a brand identity that presents the personality of a company or a product.

With more and more companies and products competing for market recognition online and offline, a well-designed logo is a business advantage that captures the attention of consumers and represents the core values of a brand at a glance. An original logo is a good tool for setting a connection with potential customers by transferring the company character and mood.

Naming:

So here, I wanted to share the thought process of creating a logo for our Design Agency "WorkdIn". Let's talk a bit about the naming convention first, the name is derived from the combination of "Worked" + "In" ( this name was actually suggested by my younger brother and I felt really fascinating towards the word "In" like in "LinkedIn" and immediately agreed upon it :P), that is simplified as "WorkdIn".

Psychology of Logo Design:

The simple things which it is built of, can impact your potential customers. So, our logo should be simple yet effective that they fall in love with our brand and able to understand the services we provide.

So, I decided to keep the logo simple yet representing the services we offer. I have picked 2 elements: Typography and symbols representing Design & Code. Am I going to make it? Let's see:

I chose 'Comfortaa' for the typography of the logo first, then I tried different symbols of code and design, thinking if any of them fits in any alphabet or our brand's name. I tried Hash, < > (Code braces), colons but was not satisfied, So I thought I can go with the 'Insert' option, which is something blinks like a rectangle to enter the text in the command prompt.

Without Command-Line, it's very rare that a developer working on any code. So, 'insert' felt like the best option for me to keep for the Code symbol. And as usual, I wanted to use 'Pen' for the Design symbol. But, not a regular pen tip, or maybe anything else with the pen tip?

I started framing ideas with insert symbol and pen symbol to fit in alphabets. No doubt that pen can be replaced with 'i' in WorkdIn, which represents like a pen tip etc. So, I gave an iconic graphic pen-style giving space between the nib and the holder of the pen, representing small 'i', with a dot-separated. Now comes insert, played with the insert icon for both 'n' at last and 'w' at first, I loved it at the 'W' position because insert can be something used to insert a letter/word and there starts inserting the 'WorkdIn' from 'W'. It doesn't make sense to keep insert symbol at the end at 'N' alphabet as the typing of the word starts from the first letter of any word. So, 'W' suits for insert symbol and 'I' suits for the Graphic Pen symbol.

Color Theory:

Decision was done and we are good to go. So, let's decide on brand colors before starting to design it. I chose a shade of Magenta '#cd3363' and Muted Green(Kind of Turqoise) '#4daaa7' which equally represents Creativity, Balance, Loyalty and Compasssion. These are complementary to each other as well as satisfies the meanings for UI Design, User Experience, Logical Minded(Code) etc., Also, this shade of Magenta used for corporate too. I like the color combination as started designing the Logo.

After I am done with playing with Typography and inserting the symbols, I felt something is missing. Then I thought to give a circle at the end of each letter which represents the point of pen tool while using it to draw shapes. The reason to give it at the end is , saying that the alphabets are written using the Pen tool, as the circle represents the point of the pen. Cool!! We are done with the logo.

As decided, the insert symbol can be represented with the mask of the letter, because the letter can be typed while the insert symbol is blinking at a particular point. So, we have a mask for 'W'. Other alphabets with Pen tooltip points at the end. Pen tool replacing the 'i' letter and we are done. BOOM!!
