Workation at Komatsu

Since last year, employees at Komatsu Germany GmbH - Mining Division can take up to two weeks a year of workation. Dirk Kohmann , Project Manager Production Control shares his experience of embarking on a workation, blending work and leisure seamlessly while soaking up the sun on the beautiful spanish island of Tenerife.

Where did you go for your workation and for how long?

I spent six wonderful weeks on Tenerife in my holiday home. Of these, four weeks were dedicated to pure relaxation, while I used two weeks for work. My family, including my wife son and our furry companion joined me over the Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve 2024.

What challenges did you face during the workation?

Fortunately, my workation trip went smoothly thanks to the seamless transition from my home office routine. Looking back, I've realised though how important it is to pack adequate technical equipment for future trips to further increase productivity.

What positive experiences did you have during the workation?

The workation experience exceeded my expectations as it combined the tranquility of a holiday with the productivity of work. Working in a new environment increased my motivation and enabled me to pursue my leisure activities effortlessly after work.

Do you have any tips for colleagues at Komatsu who would like to do workation?

For those considering a workation, careful planning is key. Familiarize yourself with the local conditions, make sure you have a stable internet connection and choose a quiet workspace. Also consider the time difference for a smooth coordination during meetings.

What is your favorite memory of the workation?

Having free time after work and enjoying trips to the beach and celebrating Christmas and New Year's Eve in mild temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.

What is the summary of your workation?

Workation is flexible and location-independent working. I was able to work from abroad without any major problems, as well as from my home office in Germany. However, I find workation truly valuable when combined with a holiday experience away from home.

Would you do workation again? If so, where would you go next?

Without a doubt, I would revisit Tenerife for another workation experience.

Should more companies introduce workation and why?

In today's dynamic workplace, fostering employee satisfaction and retention is of paramount importance. Introducing workation not only improves employee morale, but is also an attractive benefit in the face of increasing competition for talent.
