Workaholics: Balance and Well-Being

“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” - Dolly Parton

Every July 5, Workaholics Day is celebrated worldwide. This day not only reminds you to balance work and home lives, but it also reminds you of the importance of maintaining a healthy barrier between your work and personal well-being.

What are workaholics? According to Cambridge Dictionary, ‘workaholics’ are people who work very long hours and find it difficult not to work. Just like alcoholics are addicted to alcohol, workaholics are addicted to working. However, workaholics regard their work as a duty rather than something they enjoy.?

Are you a workaholic? Here are some signs that tell you if you’re a workaholic:

  1. You always prioritize work.
  2. You always work, even when you’re sick.
  3. You think about work even on weekends.
  4. You come to work early and leave late beyond your shift.

The Importance of a Healthy Work-Life Balance

After a day’s work, it’s important to put your foot down and detach yourself from your job. Socializing and going out with friends are ways of coping with work addiction. But if you’re struggling to cope with it, don’t hesitate to seek the help of a therapist or counselor.?

Work is important because it’s a means to make a living, but always remember that having a healthy work-life balance lessens your stress and helps you live freely.

Why is work-life balance important?

1. Fewer Burnouts

A burnout doesn’t occur immediately. It happens when you persistently feel stressed out, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. It’s a slow process that builds with stressors from work, but it’s avoidable.?

One of the things you can do to avoid burning yourself out is to take breaks. If you feel like you’re going to burst from stress, stop what you’re doing and take a break. Go out, breathe fresh air, and come back feeling better.

2. Fewer Health Problems

Based on a study done in 2012, workaholics often suffer from anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Your health may be stable now, even when you work longer every day, but this could change over time. Your overall health may deteriorate as you continuously overexert yourself at work and sleep less.?

You can avoid health problems by implementing a functioning work and sleep schedule. If there’s no need to work overtime, allocate unfinished tasks for the day after so that you can clock out on time and get adequate rest.

3. Increased Productivity

Increased productivity isn't always the result of longer work hours. When there’s less tension and anxiety at work, you feel more productive and motivated to take on tasks. By taking breaks, pursuing hobbies, and spending time with loved ones, you can rejuvenate your mind.

While hard work and dedication are admirable, it's important to prioritize self-care and personal well-being. By achieving work-life balance, you can enhance your productivity, improve your mental and physical health, and live a more fulfilling life. Let's commemorate this day by embracing a balanced approach to work and life and cultivating a culture that appreciates both professional accomplishments and personal fulfillment.
