Work is worship

Work is worship

I don't go to church, I don't pray, I have no faith.

Not unusual at all, I know.

Atheism is my religion and yet I do worship my work.

No, not the work you have to do for bad people and bad clients. Mood hoovers don't inspire, late payers don't fill me with the need to wring more creative juices out of my brain.

But good people, those who appreciate and reward what you do on time and without quibble, make me have faith.

One of the reasons resentment often seeps into work or family relationships is that worship of work is seen as odd. Work is a means to an end, surely? It pays for nice things, like a comfortable home, a car, meals out and holidays.

I used to be firmly in that camp myself.

My life as a teacher was one long advent calendar of counting down - term starts and you'd say "30 more get ups." That dynamic changes though when you work for yourself and love what you do.

You can create an altar. You can kneel and pray. You can observe rituals.

Work becomes worship only when it fulfils you.

Like a religion I suppose.

I find web design and copywriting to be incredibly fulfilling. It is creative, requires patience, needs feeding with inspiring acts and events. It is a huge part of my life - great work that thrills you becomes just that.

Now don't get me wrong.

There's no ball and chain attached from leg to desk. I have a rich life here in Manchester, of meeting friends, documenting life in and around the city with photos, videos and words.

So yes I do worship my work.

I'm proud of what I do; I love what I do and how I live.

I'd suggest too that if work is not worship for you, you've not found the right work, yet.

If you want input on how to be happy and find a way to worship away from religion, call me: 07462923476 or email me at [email protected]

Working hard and doing great work you love is, to me, as important as moving and breathing.

Here endeth the sermon.

That looks like Manchester Anglican Cathedral remember the angle well when going from Salford Uni to the railway stations or Chorlton Street b us station. Well the Good Lord said 6 days shall you toil and on the seventh shall ye rest and worship the Creator. Sadly for our divided population and economy many have to work 7 days whilst many do 5 and some want to do as few as 4. No wonder our economy is in decline and our productivity so far behind other nations .
