Work and workplaces of the world are broken...but there's HOPE

Workplaces of the world are broken! That's a recurring theme in dozens of reports, studies, and posts.

But you already knew that. Right?

The brokenness existed BC -- before COVID, but people tried to hide, or ignore the brokenness. Or believed they had to live with the brokenness -- that it couldn't get better.

It's not hiding any longer.

Most workplaces suck the life out of their employees.

Survey your friends to see if your peer group is consistent with the studies that say 6 out of 10 people are emotionally detached at work!

  • They don’t want to go to work.
  • Once they are at work, they can’t wait to leave.
  • While they are "at work", allegedly working, they are dreaming of being somewhere else (or actively searching for their next job).
  • And, when they leave (or finish) work, they are depleted and drained — not energized and excited.

You’re a smart cookie — you know this to be true. Many of you know this because it’s your lived experience. Or the lived experience of family and friends.

NEWSFLASH:
What happens at work, doesn’t stay at work -- no more than what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!

The brokenness of work spills over into the rest of your life.

If you’re one of the fortunate few who thrives at work, there’s a better chance you’re also flourishing at home and in the community.

But for the majority, they leave (or finish) work depleted and drained, that creeps over into their personal life and family time.

Either they work hard to recharge, or feel like they're struggling to stay afloat -- trying to tread water for hours on end. It's not sustainable!

SIGNS OF BROKENNESS

Here are a few signs and symptoms of this brokenness and how it is impacting YOU and those you love.

  • STRESS. 44% of the world’s workers reported experiencing stress during the previous day. >> What about you? Were you stressed at work yesterday? Are you stressed now?
  • LANGUISHING. That’s my word. According to Gallup, 33% of workers are THRIVING…or were thriving. The Gallup study was conducted BEFORE record inflation and an impending world war started. If 33% of workers are, or were, flourishing, that means 67% are languishing. Languishing is a life (or life at work) that feels hollow and empty.
  • WORRY. Globally, 40% of workers FELT worry “A LOT OF THE DAY”. How often do you feel worry?
  • ANGER. Imagine a world where 1/5 of the people felt angry A LOT OF THE DAY. You don’t have to imagine. Just look around you. Or maybe even look in the mirror.
  • SADNESS. At the time of the Gallup study, 23% of people felt SAD a lot of the day. Anecdotally, I’ve seen and sensed this number rise over the last 30 days? Have you seen or felt increased sadness in, or around you?

Work IS broken.
Workplaces of the world are broken.
It’s time for a change!

“The real fix is simple." That’s a line from the Gallup Organization.

I agree. But, I also remember what Einstein taught us — SIMPLE DOES NOT EQUAL EASY.

SIMPLE means it’s neither complex nor complicated.
Changing work will take effort. FOCUSED EFFORT!

For the past three years, I’ve been pioneering gratitude innovations. At first, I didn’t realize they were innovations and I didn't know I was pioneering.

I was following my curiosity.

It’s part of the answer. A cornerstone of the answer. A catalyst for the answer.

Kevin Monroe you are on to something REALLY BIG!! Excellent distilling of Gallup’s study and as you said the answer to brokenness is “simple but not easy”. Gratitude is the Answer and for those reading this that don’t know Kevin personally, definitely take him up on his offer for a live conversation, your life will never be the same…????
