Work Travel & Client Meals - How to Stay on Track?

As busy executives, client dinners and frequent work travel are part of the job. While these commitments are crucial for business success, they can pose challenges to maintaining your health and fitness goals. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate these situations while staying on track with your wellness routine.

1. Smart Choices at Client Dinners

Pre-Plan Your Meal: If possible, review the restaurant menu online before the dinner. Identify healthier options such as grilled proteins, salads, and vegetable sides. This can help you make informed choices and avoid impulsive decisions.

Limit Alcohol Intake: While it’s common to have a drink during client dinners, try to limit your alcohol consumption. If you are drinking, opt for spirits and low calorie mixers as these have around one third of the calories of a pint or glass of wine.

2. Healthy Eating on the Road

Pack Healthy Snacks: When traveling, pack nutritious snacks such as nuts, seeds, fruit, and protein bars. Having healthy options readily available can prevent you from reaching for unhealthy airport or hotel snacks.

Stay Hydrated: Travel can be dehydrating, especially long flights. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout your journey. Herbal teas and coconut water are also good options for staying hydrated.

Choose Healthy Restaurants: Research dining options at your destination that offer healthy meals or even show calories and nutrition info on the menu.

3. Maintain a Fitness Routine

Hotel Gyms and Amenities: Choose accommodations with fitness amenities such as a gym, pool, or nearby walking trails. Utilise these facilities to keep up with your exercise routine, even while traveling.

Portable Workouts: Pack lightweight fitness equipment like resistance bands or a skipping rope. These can be used in your hotel room for a quick and effective workout. Bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, squats, and planks are also great options.

Active Exploration: Incorporate physical activity into your travel itinerary. Explore new cities on foot or rent a bike. This not only helps you stay active but also allows you to experience the destination more intimately.

Managing client dinners and work travel while maintaining your health and fitness goals is achievable with the right strategies. By making mindful choices, planning ahead, and prioritising your well-being, you can stay on track and continue to perform at your best.
