WORK IS STILL UGLY

WORK IS STILL UGLY

If you enjoy this, please share it!??Anyone can subscribe here:??https://bit.ly/3INhSbL.

???___________________________________________________________________

I love the progressive professional ideals so many of us teach and talk about, but in many workplaces they simply don’t exist.

Pro-employee policies are in fact on the rise.??They include more human evaluation systems (e.g., no forced ranking), providing significant autonomy and empowerment, proactively managing toxic behaviors, transparency in decision-making and finances, embracing diversity and addressing inequities, etc.??

However, in most workplaces, things are still rough and no one seems to be talking about this.??Cheating, lying, bullying, favoritism, selfishness, rudeness and many related negative behaviors are still very common, even among people in leadership positions.??

I share this simply to acknowledge that a majority of workers have supervisors and / work environments that are sometimes quite ugly.??To them I say, “You are not alone!”??And you don’t have to take it.

So, what do you do?

First, don’t enable negative behavior and don’t enflame it by responding with negativity.

Next, consider making change where you work.??Respectfully speak up, start the needed conversation, confront the person, etc.??This is definitely not risk free but is often necessary to ignite needed change.

Finally, if your change efforts have not worked or you just don’t feel you’re able to affect change – leave.??Apparently, it’s trendy now.??The good news is that today’s workforce is expected to hold many roles for different organizations over the course of a career.??This means more chances to find positive places where you actually fit.

In the long run, I have confidence that the Millennials and Zs will save us.??I dig their positivity and kindness vibe.??But change takes time, so for those of you still dealing with problematic situations at work, know that me and many others are trying to help!??Know you’re not alone.??Know you can enact change.??Know you can create other options.??Know that I’m pulling for you!

TODD’S TIPS

Need more time???No, you don’t.??You just need to use your time differently.??Consider these often-overlooked tips:

Automate:??What technology can be applied to your work processes to speed things up?

Delegate:??Is there another person willing and able to own a task and for whom the task will be at least somewhat developmental?

Outsource:??Sometimes a vendor who specializes in a particular task or tasks can help you save time.

Eliminate:??Meetings – can we talk about meetings, please???It’s not just meetings that can sometimes be eliminated.??Many processes have old designs with redundant or now unnecessary steps.??

It’s your time – use it wisely!

Course news:?Three new courses went live this week (Solving Relationship Problems at Work already has over 1000 learners!) – and – three other courses of mine are now tagged with the ‘popular’ designation!??FYI, they are Proven Tips for Managing Your Time, Management Tips, and New Manager Foundations.??My course page at LinkedIn:??https://bit.ly/3yAxInP.??

Speaking:?I’m negotiating with a firm to deliver multiple talks to a group of CEOs in Johannesburg, South Africa.??I’m hopeful as I currently don’t have a large presence in that part of the world.

Dancing with Monsters:?My publisher just informed me that the cover design is complete.??I will reveal the cover of Dancing with Monsters this week… so that’s why you have to go ring the bell on my profile, so you’ll be notified!?

Until next time – stay safe, go learn something, maybe help someone, or at least do something interesting!

Yup. These are so tricky. We leave employees to fend for themselves. I would love to see more leaders who have compassion and empathy.

I'm currently reading Radical Candor by Kim Scott - I'm sure you have already read it, but if not, it's worth the time. What you said here made me think of her book: "First, don’t enable negative behavior and don’t enflame it by responding with negativity. Next, consider making change where you work.??Respectfully speak up, start the needed conversation, confront the person, etc.??This is definitely not risk free but is often necessary to ignite needed change."

Todd, the rules of work are all being rewritten thanks to generational changes, the pandemic, technology, and so many other factors. I think we all need to take a good hard look in start building our work paradigms from the ground up.
