The Work Still to be Done

Last week saw me elected as Vice Chair of the Helderberg Chapter of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry . This is a valuable appointment considering the work I’ve been doing with entrepreneurs for a little over a decade. The Chamber has access to government and industry bodies, which will be important to drive the reduced workweek revolution. It will be great to test the appetite here in the Helderberg region.

Sitting in the Old Mutual auditorium to listen to the presentation of an experienced professor, provided some invaluable insights. To address the fact that the economy is not growing fast enough, the professor suggested a four-day week as one of his five proposed solutions. This had me sit up and take note, as I have discovered the same a few months ago and is now merely a plan away from being rolled out.

While the AGM elaborated that we are focused on the Western Cape economy, it also alluded to our responsibility to not only South Africa but the greater African continent. The Chamber is more than 200 years old and prides itself on being the oldest member-based organisation on the continent.

Soon we’ll have to put this storied history to work as we drive the change that is necessary for the citizens of this country.

My election as Vice Chair finally gives me the power to influence real change in a region I fell in love with more than two decades ago. The AGM provided some remarkable insights into our potential as a country and also reinforced the fact that I am in the right place. While I will be committed to growing the Helderberg Chapter and creating real change here, my focus will also be on making South Africa (and Africa) a great place to live and do business in.
