Work & play: Jenny's summer road trip
Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga
Enhancing wellbeing through recreation.
My summer holiday started like a lot like many others, it seems... With rain. Despite this, I managed to fit in some recreation with my small whānau, enjoying the ocean, rivers, mountain biking trails, and stunning sunset views at Wharariki Beach.
While I was out and about, I took time to reconnect with outdoors leaders. It was great to see:
I also had a long-overdue meeting with Professor Bevan Grant and Rob Greenaway , members of the ARPRO accreditation committee.

I was keen to hear some of the challenges the outdoors sector are facing, to inform my priorities this year. Loud and clear, staffing and funding are the two biggest challenges. Close behind, is the need for the continuation of current, relevant guidelines on the Support Adventure website, and leadership-level connection opportunities for those in the outdoors sector.
On staffing, recent news about revisions to the tertiary sector will continue to be an area where we advocate for the needs of the outdoor sector. Last year, we submitted on the Vocational Education and Training System Reform. Read our submission on our website. We know outdoor tertiary education provides an important pipeline for outdoors staffing. We will continue to be a voice for industry with the upcoming consultation and change process.
Right now, I am working on two Good Practice Guidelines, and I've started planning for a national hui for outdoors leaders. This will take place mid-year, so keep your eyes peeled for updates! Finally, with funding, I will look to develop some resources, which will help support fundraising activities.
If you work or play in the outdoors and would like to share your challenges and needs with me, feel free to flick me a LinkedIn DM or email [email protected].
