Work Life Balance

Was reading an interesting article in Times Life, Sunday Times on finding our own equation on work-life balance, whether it is a fancy formula or a simple sum!

Well, I have not been a genius at mathematics and I think that’s why have been grappling with this equation all my life, trying to balance work, health, family, friends, children (oh yes, they are separate category and need special mention instead of clubbing them in family because it takes so much of time and energy to be with them), recreation, pursuing hobbies etc.

Trying to balance ‘work’ and ‘life’ is probably the most significant challenges faced by all. I guess there is no secret formula as there is no way one can do justice to all of these.  One needs to prioritize and choose one or two things that are non-negotiable and manage the rest as time permits. I have also realized it is not fair to feel guilty but deal with situation and our choices head-on.  There are situations when professional and personal commitments need to be fulfilled at the same time; the trick is to choose the one that is most important according to you at that point in time and not feel guilty of giving a second priority to the other.

Jack Welch very rightly said – There’s no such thing as work-life balance. There are work-life choices, and you make them and they have consequences.
