Work-Life Balance at One River Schools
For One River “work-life balance” is about incorporating your job into your life.? We believe in our mission so our work is part of our life.??
Like many mission driven organizations, we hire people who are passionate about our goals.? Transforming Art Education ? is our aim and the joy we get from seeing our students thrive in our program is what we live for!
Firstly, let’s be clear, we urge our employees to manage their time well and keep to a 40 hour work week where possible.? However, sometimes a staff shortage or sudden uptick in student enrollments can make this difficult to maintain every single week.? So we also ask for some flexibility at times.? This is a two way street and we try to be as flexible as possible when it comes to giving back some time to employees when things quieten down.
?
We feel that those that are truly passionate about our mission will not mind putting in some extra hours when necessary.? The payoff comes in many forms.? First and foremost it pays off by letting us continue to give our students the best possible art educational experience.? It also helps our school community - we help each other.? It helps employees to gain recognition for “going the extra mile” - this brings them pay raises, bonuses, promotions and job satisfaction.??

We foster a fun and collaborative working environment that makes the day go quickly and never drag.? Our teams work together in a public facing setting and staff see that their Directors are working just as hard, if not harder than they are.? A working environment where everyone is pulling their weight is incredibly motivating.? When nobody is “phoning it in”, there is none of the resentment or ill-feeling that can sometimes be caused when an employee is being “carried” by the efforts of others.
Our corporate team never forgets that school staff have busy days and multifaceted roles.? So we foster a “servant-leader” mentality - the corporate team is there to help and support the school staff.? From our CEO on down, we are always available when people need help. We appreciate our staff and celebrate their accomplishments.
It’s not possible to truly separate work from life.? Work is part of life and life is part of work.? Enjoying our work is what gives us balance.? It’s no longer a “chore” but something that we relish.? That, for us, is the true meaning of work-life balance.?
