Work-Life Balance Is a Myth. Here’s Why…

Here’s the truth.

I haven’t had ‘work-life balance’ in my life - EVER.

In my opinion, a fulfilling life isn’t about balance - it’s about tension and the management of it.

The tension created between competing priorities and the feeling of progress toward purpose-driven outcomes.

Tension is about managing CHOICES and OUTCOMES.

With the same amount of time in the day as everyone else… you can’t spend the same ‘balance’ of time on every area of life… you’d never get anywhere - you’d be average at everything.

Like a web of priorities - some outcomes will require a little time, while others will require a lot.

The tension of choosing, creating and managing these outcomes is the game of ‘work-life tension’.

Most people don’t understand this concept…

They think— “Well if I spend 2 hours on my business, I have to spend 2 hours with my family to balance it out.”

This kind of ‘balance’ is often driven by a sense of guilt versus any sense of purpose.

That's a lose-lose game.

Acting out of the balance of obligation doesn’t create outcomes— It creates resentment.

It’s more about quality of time vs quantity of time.

You’ll spend more time on things that have high value to you vs things that don’t— period.

Life is measured in choices and outcomes.

Being. Doing. Having.

It takes what I call becoming ‘strategically selfish’.

It’s a constant negotiation of choices based on prioritising outcomes that align more closely with your purpose.

The closer things feel to your purpose, the more your time and attention will be spent to carve out those outcomes - this creates imbalance, and imbalance creates tension.

Being able to manage and direct this tension strategically is an underrated skill and superpower.

Balance doesn’t build a ‘fulfilling’ life. Imbalance does.

It’s never an ‘equal sum among all parts’ game.

Life is fulfilling when your values and choices align with their corresponding outcomes.

Because you can’t have everything and do everything at the same time.

Totally agree that it is about alignment with purpose, and you can't have everything. There is always a price (cost) to pay before winning the prize (results).
