Work-life balance

Work-life balance

While I was studying nor during my first job experience, it was not always easy to balance work with leisure interests, especially before the pandemic. The pandemic had a large impact on boosting the remote work concept as a whole and enabled a lot for employees (Mark, Kun, Rintel & Sellen, 2022). It is not only a current topic after the pandemic, as the author states in his article, it was already important in previous decades as people had the feeling that the life aspect is overruled by the load of work (Guest, 2002).? A common definition of work-life balance is from the employee's point of view “the dilemma of managing work obligations and personal/family responsibilities” (Lockwood, 2003, p.3).

In my opinion, the employee perspective is even broader because it is not only balancing with responsibilities. It also includes fulfilling personal interests as well as personal development beside work. For instance, practicing hobbies, learning a new language, visiting friends etc. With new working concepts like home office or remote work, it enables many new opportunities, which I love to use. For example, I am currently on my way to the Baltic coast of Germany to visit former fellow students from my bachelors’s degree to spend a weekend there.

Since 4 a.m., I've been actively engaged in my day, making the most of my time with productivity and efficiency. I kicked off my morning by delving into my routine responsibilities as a Revenue Management analyst, examining the daily booking report and strategically managing my flight portfolio. Subsequently, I tackled emails, participated in meetings, and progressed with the various projects currently on my desk. While this working style may not appeal to everyone, I find immense satisfaction in it, thriving on the ability to concentrate amidst the comforting hum of background noise. With a short stopover in Hamburg, I grabbed a traditional “Franzbr?tchen” for Breakfast and after 8 hours journey time I was greeted with the typical “Moin!” at my final destination, which means hello in the northern parts of Germany. A perfect way to start into the weekend.

This is just one instance among many that exemplifies why I genuinely find joy in this mode of working.

Great article! ?? I was always curious about how you manage your work-life balance, especially when I witnessed you visiting different countries in your weekend plans. I may still be a little jealous about Machu Picchu. ?? Thank you for the great content! ??
