Work Life Balance

"Better learn balance. Balance is key", said Mr. Miyagi in the movie The Karate Kid. Work life balance is not a new term nor a new way of being. However it has been making headlines in interviews and workplace discussions. Why the sudden interest? What does this mean for an employee.

This led to engaging conversations with my mentees and I am taking the liberty of sharing the gist.

For a first time mom or back to work mother this means flexibility and ability to spend more time with her new born.

For an employee in their 20s to early 30s it is being able to log out on time and socialize or pursue their side gigs. To elucidate this Hilary Clinton said " Don't confuse having a career with having a life". Our millennials are well aware of this.

A family oriented middle age employee defines work life balance as the ability to balance the expectations of family + workplace teams.

Socially active 50s + feel the need to strike a balance between personal health/ care + family + workplace + community

For a homemaker it is nothing more than finding time for self / self care amidst the endless scurry of tasks, schedules, visitors and helpers

Towards the twilight of our career, or during our second innings we realize, we left ourselves behind. We realise and I quote Michelle Obama "We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own To Do list".

So why not start early and have these enlightening conversations at workplace. My takeaway here is spend time on what is important to you and not just on what is urgent. What is yours?

Well said! So true. Women definitely need to be empowered to be advocates for self care and work life balance. It’s a journey. Grateful for Life coach and Job mentors like yourself to send reminder checks to stay on the right track in this journey of life.
