Work Lessons From Twisters
How do summer movies look in the dead of winter? The hype machine has moved on. It's not like I am watching Argylle which was hyped for months, did not look interesting and faded after one week in cinemas.
Didn't inspire me to subscribe to Amazon Prime. I was not originally interested in Twisters. The 1996 version- a movie so old the Dallas Cowboys were Super Bowl Champions- has not been viewed all the way through. I waited for the scene with the cow in the tornado and felt nothing else would be interesting.
Develop Characters
I always enjoyed Bill Paxton and wrote a tribute article to him when he passed in 2017. What I saw of the original film, I recall no character development. It was probably there. I recall the cow in a tornado.
This is like recalling the prosthetic at the end of Boogie Nights. There were some good characters in that film. They tried too hard with the seventies fashions and formatted the film like Goodfellas.
None of which has to do with Twisters. The characters at the beginning are fleshed out. That sets up the film. It is closer to the beginning of Cliffhanger- another summer movie from long ago.
People take jobs and drift apart. It's a movie so they come back together in Oklahoma. I couldn't watch the destruction without thinking of the natural disasters that plague the world all year.
Not Mentioning Climate Change Doesn't Mean It Doesn't Exist
As there was no specific enemy in Top Gun: Maverick, there is no mention of climate change in Twisters. This should not be a preachy film. It has been said fire season in California lasts thirteen months per year. There were always natural disasters. They seem more commonplace now.

Be More Than an Influencer
Remember when I said "We need less influencers and more movie stars?" Here comes Glen Powell to save the day. Tyler, his character, is a storm chaser with a YouTube Channel. There are copycats. They did not study the factors as to why tornadoes happen.
Find Common Ground
Kate was not looking for a relationship. The cowboy might come on strong at first. They always do. He has common interests and studied as much as she did.
If You Feel It, Chase It
I said that at work as there was a tornado warning and the ones who talk about the vague concept of "Safety" too much had us continue working as if nothing happened. No one was injured. If the warehouse looked like that movie theater or motel- different story.
It was funny that some people complain about cheap motels even when the storms are coming. the ones who know what to do take people to shelter, as best as they can find.
Do Summer Movies Look Good Next Winter?
Sometimes. I happened to watch Twisters in IMAX. It had more to do with the showtime than watching it on the biggest screen possible. The second viewing after seeing a movie in theaters is usually a letdown. The next time it is viewed returns to the original experience.
Make a good film. Rarely do I see a film in theaters that is not good. Pretty in Pink annoyed me. For ninety-nine cents? Don't watch it again. Some movies are worth seeing once and never again. Others elicit repeat viewings. Tell a good story and the film is worth watching in any format at any time.
