A cooperative development agreement has been inked between Bosch and Pirelli . It seeks to collaborate in the development of novel driving features and software-based solutions through the use of in-tire sensors, or sensors that are embedded into tires. This translates to better driving dynamics, increased safety, and more comfort for drivers. Together, Bosch and Pirelli intend to investigate improved tire signal processing logic as a possible input for improved vehicle dynamic controllers. They have a long-term ambition for their collaboration.
The first system of its kind in the world, Pirelli Cyber Tyre, is built around tires with built-in sensors that gather data and send it to the car's computer for real-time processing. In an early collaborative initiative with the hypercar maker Pagani Automobili , Bosch has already created an ESP application particularly tailored to Pirelli tires. The Pagani Utopia Roadster's Pirelli Cyber Tyre technology communicates important tire data to the ESP control unit. This makes it possible to make the best use of each tire's unique characteristics and performance, resulting in increased safety and customized driving conditions.
Bosch joins the development partnership with its system-level hardware and software knowledge as a worldwide provider of technology and services. Bosch's development and production of tire pressure sensors, which utilize the "Bluetooth Low Energy" (BLE) standard, demonstrate the company's leadership in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensor technology.
Combining this knowledge with Pirelli's in-tire device technologies—hardware and software, algorithms, and tire modeling—will enable real-time tire data collection, processing, and transmission via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to provide parameters for the vehicle's electronic control system. These days, Pirelli and Bosch want to use Bosch MEMS technology for in-tire uses.
