Humanity has survived the first year of covid… Yes, the first year unfortunately.
Everything we do and touch is affected, and infected, as we move through our days. From closed schools to overwhelmed healthcare to first response to business failures to…to…to. However, we have figured some things out and most predominately Work From Home (WFH) and the bringing home the stresses of the day reserved for the office so we can detach and come home.
For those who WFH, there is no detach, but rather help the kids with their daily school assignments, cooking meals, tending to sick children, and possibly arguing with the one we love who’s trying hard too. The quiet time after putting kids to bed when adults could come down together before bed is now back to work for the both of them into the late hours.
Leadership begins looking at where and when along with temporary or permanent closings start to happen along with the talent in those places thus paring down various expense lines. I have been on both sides of this equation and these are not easy decisions to make. Also, what equipment is now necessary for people to work remotely – the subject of today.
In addition to covid, WFH has other serious factors:
1) People do not thrive in this environment – they get sick and this time there nowhere to go because of the epidemic
2) People are over stressed with no place to go to rest and recuperate – they burn-out
3) People also now in a position to look for other opportunities with more of something they are missing or not getting in their current position – money, bad boss, location, etc.
Until now, this is in every news source. However, there is something even more ominous on the horizon and that is WFH related mental and physical illness.
When employees are suffering from the above factors - Imposter Syndrome, Companion Fatigue, PTSD, alcoholism, etc. becomes another epidemic unto itself.
There are new services out there that can be conducted remotely, i.e., RBCR?, EMDR?, and more.
Each of you who are suffering and those who lead them should become familiar with these services over and above traditional behavioral and mental health services. Right now, more than any other time in history, new products/services must be made available to your employees with or without insurance coverage of those services.
Terry Earthwind Nichols is a world authority on repetitive behaviors in humans as it relates to established Q&A sequences. He is Chairman of Evolutionary Healer, LLC, a global performance transformation company, the home of RBCR?, and President of the Earthwind Academy where RBCR is taught and certified globally online.
