If you are brand new to the Live Free Blog, you may not know that Lindsay has been on before. Read Lindsay’s post here or listen to her Live Free Podcast episode?about becoming a Director of Marketing!

Lindsay is giving a brief overview of her start to freelancing:

“I started my business back in 2018–5 years ago! I was working at a corporate job and had worked at the same company for 7 or 8 years. I had climbed the ladder and received a ton of raises and promotions and whatnot. That was fine and dandy, but I hated it.

I had no children yet and had just gotten married. I managed it but thought this was the worst.

How am I supposed to manage this insanely intense job from 8 to 5 every day? I was commuting pretty far, and my husband also had an intense job.

So, I started to seek other options and found freelancing and The Live Free Academy course. I got my first client 5 years ago. It was Harvard Business School, and I did an email marketing campaign for them. That was the catalyst that showed me I could quit my job and do this.

It was the boost I needed to realize I could create a business. I have skills I can sell and just needed to figure it out.

So I left my job and was determined to figure it out. With 1 project under my belt and 0 clients, I left my job in 2019. I started with email marketing, social media marketing, and general virtual assistant work.

That summer of 2019 was when I started diving into offering marketing strategy and Director of Marketing services. It was when I got my very first marketing client that was very specific about creating a marketing strategy plan. At the back end of that marketing strategy plan, we created a roadmap for the year of what marketing needed to take place.”

Work From Home Trends

As we are near the end of the year in 2023, we have seen mass layoffs at high corporate levels. There have been a lot of economic changes, inflation changes, and changes in the ways people spend their money.

Remote Work Opportunities

With that, there have been a lot of changes in the landscape of work from home trends for freelancers and opportunities for people to start freelancing.

Lindsay has received calls from past clients at corporate levels, big firms, big companies, and their companies are cutting budgets. They are trying to figure out what the opportunities are for cutting budgets.

FULL-TIME MARKETERS ARE THE FIRST TO LAYOFF

Throughout history, marketing departments are always the first to go because they are a cost center. It is hard to attribute sales to marketing dollars unless you have good data in place. (Which is why you should always track your KPIs.)

It has given Lindsay, her marketing agency, and a lot of freelancers great remote work opportunities because, as a freelancer, she can offer leaner marketing services to corporations.

It allows them not to have the overhead of full-time employees, not having to provide benefits or insurance, and gives them the marketing they need without having enough work for all 25 full-time people.

What are Work from Home Trends in 2023?

Traditionally, corporations have not given opportunities for freelancers to work with them. You see online, digital, and local brick-and-mortar stores that hire freelancers. Corporate companies have employees, so why would they need freelancers?

Outside opinions

Lindsay says, “I think there is such a huge opportunity for freelancers to take clients in a corporate capacity. Corporations are looking for consultants and experts to come in and be an extra set of eyes that are not drinking the Kool-Aid already. To give them outside opinions and thoughts about their business.”

Professional services clients

There are also opportunities for freelancers to grasp professional services clients. Professional services are an area that is so overlooked and is a work from home trend for freelancers.

Some examples would be:

  • CPAs
  • Lawyers
  • Financial Advisors

It is a great opportunity because these professionals are not taking the time to learn how to do SEO to rank. So they need to hire it out, but most of the time they don’t know freelancers exist in this capacity.

Unaware of freelancers

So the takeaway is that if you see a part-time in-office position that has been posted on job sites, you can reach out to them and ask if they have thought about hiring a freelancer for this role.

Whether that is in marketing or an office admin assistant, there is a lack of people wanting to work. There is also a need for more knowledge from some corporate companies that hiring a freelancer for what they need is even an option.

Popular Services in Work from Home Trends

Virtual Assistants

Corporations don’t always know that there are virtual assistants, someone who can help manage calendars, emails, and that sort of thing. That is a way to help alleviate some of these budget cuts and step in and provide value.

Marketing and content roles

While marketing is a big one, other roles corporations need include data entry and any focus on content like podcast production and YouTube videos. Every company has some type of blog role, podcast role, social media role, and graphics role.

Where to find Corporate Work from Home Opportunities

LinkedIn

If you are looking for work-from-home opportunities with corporations as a client, they are not hanging out in Facebook groups.

Go to LinkedIn to start, and add anyone you have ever networked with. That means family members, friends, neighbors, and anyone you meet. Instead of adding them on Instagram, add them on LinkedIn.

Personal network

Tell everyone in your personal network what you are doing. There is nothing better than a referral!

“The more you can communicate what you do, what your value is, and who you can help, the more people will come to you.”
