Work from Home - Boon or Bane?

There has been an increasing trade of “Work from Home” these days, which has further increased after the notice issued by government after the outbreak of Corona-virus. Many techies and management professionals are working remotely from the convenience of their homes.
Just imagine, lying down on your couch, in your comfortable outfit, sipping your coffee and working. Looks like a dream? But it is not, many companies have been following this model as this is beneficial in some ways for both the employee as well as employers. For the employers, the biggest benefit is the reduction in costs and increase in productivity. Well, for employees, there are benefits like savings on commute costs. But the scenario is not that straight forward as it seems.
Well, lets find out some of the advantages and disadvantages which can help you justify that work from home is a boon of bane:
· Work from increases your work life balance as you end up saving lot of time, which is usually consumed in travelling to office. In metro cities, commuting is one of the most time-consuming tasks, thanks to the increase in traffic.
· It helps to save money, which is usually spent in food, fuel etc. When you are away from home you usually order food from some restaurant for lunch which incurs cost. Working from home helps you save this money.
· When you work from home you are less stressed because your working environment is cozier and the pressure and stress level around you is almost negligible.
· The convenience of working helps increase your productivity. You can take a short nap just after your lunch and start working again refreshed which will obviously increase your productivity and efficiency.
Looks like work from home is full of benefits and advantages? Well, it comes with its own set of disadvantages too. Let’s have a look:
· People start taking your availability for granted. Since you are at home daily, there are chances that your family will start taking your availability for granted.
· If you don’t stay professional, there are chances that you may have a lot of backlog with related to work which can hamper your productivity.
· Working in the comfort zone can make you lazy, which can hamper your efficiency and productivity. It can seriously affect your goals.
· It affects your punctuality, because you don’t have to wake up at a fixed time and reach your office. It can seriously hamper your lifestyle.
So, there are various pros and cons associated with this new strategy of work from home. If you employer provides you the benefit and you wish to enjoy the same, it is very important to work professionally and punctually in order to make the most out of it. Work from home can be a boon or bane, depending upon how you utilize this modern facility provided by the employers. From the employer’s point of view, it is important that the facility is not provided for continuous prolonged periods until very necessary.
